Team leaders and team members have the right to know the specific performance targets they\u2019ll be held accountable for.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">There is one more important right that every employee deserves: Work Place Inspiration &#8211; or WPI.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Work\u00a0place inspiration is the result of senior leaders\u2019 intentional focus on crafting policies, procedures, and practices that ensure that every member of their organization is consistently treated with trust, respect, and dignity, in every interaction.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Not \u201csometimes.&#8221; Not &#8220;most of the time.&#8221;\u00a0<i class=\"\">Every interaction<\/i>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">The problem is that most senior leaders don\u2019t pay attention to how their organization is operating &#8211; they focus all their attention on how the organization is performing.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">Performance is important but it is no more important than maintaining a work environment that is inspiring and engaging, not frustrating and draining.<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">It is unfair of leaders to expect staff to create work place inspiration\u00a0on their own. They don\u2019t know how\u00a0&#8211; and, it\u2019s not their responsibility. It\u2019s\u00a0the responsibility of senior leaders to make\u00a0create their work environment safe, trusting,\u00a0and respectful.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">How can leaders be intentional about work place inspiration?\u00a0By creating and aligning practices to an<span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0organizational constitution \u2013 a formalized statement of agreements outlining how their organization will deliver promised performance (KPIs) in alignment with the organization\u2019s valued behaviors (WPI\u00a0practices).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The benefits of work place inspiration have been proven time and again. Research* indicates that\u00a0 employees with positive personal well-being, when compared to employees with low well-being:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\">Deliver\u00a0<strong class=\"\">31% higher productivity<\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Demonstrate\u00a0<strong class=\"\">3 times higher creativity<\/strong>\u00a0on the job<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Are\u00a0<strong class=\"\">ten times more engaged<\/strong>\u00a0by their jobs<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Are\u00a0<strong class=\"\">40% more likely to receive a promotion<\/strong>\u00a0within a year<\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Generate 37% greater sales<\/strong>\u00a0figures<\/li>\n<li class=\"\">Are\u00a0<strong class=\"\">three times more satisfied<\/strong>\u00a0with their jobs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">*\u00a0<strong class=\"\"><em class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ofyp.umn.edu\/ofypmedia\/focusfy\/The_Economics_of_Wellbeing.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Economics of Wellbeing<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Tom Rath &amp; Jim Harter and\u00a0<strong class=\"\"><em class=\"\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/01\/positive-intelligence\/ar\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Positive Intelligence<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0by Shawn Achor (from the January\/February 2012 Harvard Business Review)<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Most of the organizations that I see around the globe &#8211; large or small, publicly held or private, government or Mom and Pop &#8211; are not engaging, dynamic work\u00a0environments that employees love.\u00a0Leaders must balance their emphasis upon KPIs with creating a safe, inspiring workplace, every day.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">When leaders do craft that balance, the benefits are significant &#8211; 30-40% gains in business performance, employee engagement, and customer service.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Resist the temptation to focus exclusively on performance.
