The expectations of a guaranteed pension, rich benefits, and a secure job are being replaced with fears about pension reform, rising health care costs, and government layoffs.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional structures of government are no longer sustainable. Our personnel systems, our delivery systems, and our policies and processes will not be effective in the future. If we don\u2019t start re-creating, public agencies will perish.<\/p>\n<p>When I heard the speaker ask his thought-provoking question about what I believe that I wish I didn\u2019t, he was really challenging the preconceived ideas we have about the status quo.<\/p>\n<p>Our new reality in government is one we\u2019ve never experienced before. Yet, it presents us with a window of opportunity to redefine the way we\u2019ve been doing our work.<\/p>\n<p>In the public sector, some agencies have fallen into the belief that the status quo is good (or at least good enough).\u00a0\u00a0Yet,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.kevineikenberry.com\/leadership-supervisory-skills\/creating-and-communicating-a-compelling-vision-for-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kevin Eikenberry<\/a>\u00a0framed it well when he said, \u201cStatus quo requires no leadership.\u201d\u00a0 We are facing challenges like we\u2019ve never seen before in the public sector, and the need for a leadership stronger than ever.\u00a0The public sector workforce is what will get\u00a0us to\u00a0a new and improved state.\u00a0 However, they can\u2019t help you take your organization \u201cthere\u201d until you have conveyed\u00a0your vision in the most tangible way.<\/p>\n<p>The reinvention of the public sector workplace begins with questions that force us to acknowledge the beliefs that are getting in our way. Questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What have we always done that we won\u2019t be doing anymore?<\/li>\n<li>What policies or practices are no longer serving us?<\/li>\n<li>Can we meet citizen needs in a new way?<\/li>\n<li>How can we help employees \u201clet go\u201d of the beliefs that prevent them from moving forward?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These questions require us to think big and to question the tried and true methods that have brought us to this point. The way we\u2019ve always done it is not going to work in a future driven by technology and transparency.<\/p>\n<p>What would happen if you asked your team the four questions above? What if we honestly explored a new future for the public sector? If you\u2019re not challenging the status quo in your agency you\u2019re not leading.
