When a prominent company\u2019s culture implosion hits the headlines, every business leader can learn from the incident – and the fallout. Unfortunately, some of the issues won\u2019t be unique to the company under scrutiny. Most leaders will relate as they likely face similar challenges within their work culture.<\/span><\/p>\n

When business leaders discover disrespectful practices and behaviors, they must address those issues promptly and directly. Too often, though, leaders do not take the \u201cbull by the horns.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHoping\u201d the issues resolve themselves is wishful thinking; that never fixes the problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being indirect \u2013 like a leader addressing a town hall meeting and saying, \u201csome people in this room do not model our company values. It must stop!\u201d \u2013 never fixes the problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ignoring players that frequently discount, demean, or dismiss their colleagues or customers will not stop that disrespectful behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n

For example, one company\u2019s leaders discovered a list of customers with \u201cfunny names\u201d that some employees felt was inappropriate and even racist. The fact that the list existed and was a source of entertainment for years demonstrates a clear lack of respect for the company\u2019s customers.<\/span><\/p>\n

After investigation, it was discovered that some mid-level leaders were aware of the list \u2013 and the laughter. At the time, the list was seen as \u201charmless fun.\u201d Tolerating that list (and the laughter) proved to company employees that respect was not important in their workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Effective leaders make respect as important as results. They don\u2019t leave the quality of workplace relationships to chance. They formalize values and behaviors for respectful interactions – and every formal leader models, coaches, measures, and celebrates desired respectful behaviors every day.
