{"id":4858,"date":"2015-09-05T16:51:46","date_gmt":"2015-09-05T23:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=4858"},"modified":"2015-09-05T16:52:20","modified_gmt":"2015-09-05T23:52:20","slug":"how-conflict-stunts-company-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/how-conflict-stunts-company-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"How Conflict Stunts Company Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/how-conflict-stunts-company-innovation\/attachment\/conflict\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4859\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/conflict.jpg\" alt=\"conflict\" width=\"433\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/conflict.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/conflict-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/conflict-480x364.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 433px) 100vw, 433px\" \/><\/a>I was in a meeting earlier this week where there was an invited speaker discussing a controversial topic.\u00a0 Several of the meeting participants disagreed with his point of view.\u00a0 Not a problem.\u00a0 In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlannemeth.com\/files\/MinorityInfluenceTheory.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">dissent<\/a> is shown to increase <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divergent_thinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">divergent thinking<\/a> and creative solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was the participants began personally attacking the speaker and making loud inflammatory comments on the sidelines.\u00a0 While task conflict has been shown to increase divergent thinking, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/article\/207196\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">personal conflict<\/a> does not.\u00a0 In fact, it shuts down creativity and curiosity and increases polarization.\u00a0 What a lost opportunity this was for people to expand their knowledge and push the boundaries of their thinking.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all been in meetings like this, perhaps not as incendiary, but certainly as polarized.\u00a0 It\u2019s not comfortable and it is not productive.\u00a0 Why do we let ourselves get stuck in this situation?<\/p>\n<p><u>Fear of Challenge:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s scary to have our beliefs challenged.\u00a0 The idea that what we believe to be true or correct may not be is unsettling, especially if it is core to our values.\u00a0 But look at how much our world has changed in recent times and how much we\u2019ve all had to re-examine our values. It\u2019s open-mindedness and flexibility that have brought about such innovations as the computer, space travel, vaccinations, fair employment law, and the formation of the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p><u>Fear of Change:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Even if it\u2019s not a challenge to our beliefs, change can be arduous.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing what people will do to avoid change.\u00a0 Take exercise, for example.\u00a0 How much rationalizing, excuse-making, and blaming have you or someone you know carried out to avoid getting fit?\u00a0 The same thing happens in organizations.\u00a0 People will do and say all sorts of things to avoid having to change the way things are done.\u00a0 My favorite excuse in this context is: \u201cIt\u2019s always been done this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><u>Lack of Understanding:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Humans share 99.9% of DNA with each other.\u00a0 We are clearly more similar than different.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy to lose sight of that and believe others are so far away from our position that there could be no overlap. There usually is quite a bit of agreement, but it requires a true understanding of the other\u2019s perspective to realize that. \u00a0As the speaker at the meeting this week said, \u201cMost of us want to live in a nice house, have good schools for our children, and pay lower taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><u>Lack of Respect:<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to overcome passionate disagreement, dislike, or even ingrained prejudices.\u00a0 Compassion can help us get there.\u00a0 If we put ourselves in someone else\u2019s shoes and try to understand how they came to be in their circumstances we can usually find some level of compassion to treat the person with respect and dignity as a fellow human.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the homeless alcoholic begging for money on the street who you may have dismissed with disgust as you walked by.\u00a0 Even if you disagree with panhandling and drinking alcohol, you could open your mind up to wonder what would drive someone to get to that point and have compassion for a human being who is living in such a state.\u00a0 Compassion doesn\u2019t require action, just feeling, just a little understanding.<\/p>\n<p>It takes effort and practice to remain calm and focused on contentious issues, and not let emotions take over.\u00a0 No one ever said it was easy.\u00a0 But wouldn\u2019t you rather have a workplace where people can disagree in a civil manner and imagine possibilities outside of their preconceived realm and generate innovative solutions?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was in a meeting earlier this week where there was an invited speaker discussing a controversial topic.\u00a0 Several of the meeting participants disagreed with his point of view.\u00a0 Not a problem.\u00a0 In fact, dissent is shown to increase divergent thinking and creative solutions.
