A bachelor\u2019s degree is less than $60\/month.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow an innovator<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>Shai Reshef is an\u00a0<strong>entrepreneur<\/strong>, philanthropist and disruptive force. As the founder and\u00a0<strong>president\u00a0<\/strong>of University of the People (<a href=\"http:\/\/uopeople.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">UoPeople<\/a>), \u201cthe world\u2019s first non-profit, tuition-free\u00a0<strong>accredited<\/strong>\u00a0online university,\u201d he has dismantled the traditional business model and replaced it with an alternative one \u2013 a degree-granting institution that operates on a shoestring budget of $1 million.<\/div>\n<p>His\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/shai_reshef_a_tuition_free_college_degree\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">talk<\/a>, \u201cAn ultra-low-cost college degree\u201d featured on TED Talks poses a thought-provoking question: Why does college cost so much? Their mission is \u201cthat no student will be denied the right to access higher education due to financial constraints.\u201d The application fee is $50.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2009, students from 170 countries have enrolled at UoPeople in business and computer science degree programs. Microsoft and Hewlett Packard are sponsors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Help others and earn college credit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>LearningCounts\u2122 is an initiative created by CAEL. Students can create a portfolio in the Prior Learning Assessment program, a multi-disciplined tool for granting college credit for learning acquired outside of the classroom. Options include volunteering (Volunteermatch), military training and on-the-job experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Take a direct path<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>StraighterLine is an academic company that offers online courses and a guaranteed pathway to universities like DeVry, University of Phoenix, Strayer and 90 other accredited colleges and universities. Almost 20,000 students enroll annually and pay $99\/month.<\/p>\n<p>Burck Smith, CEO and founder of StraighterLine, has an extensive history of academically related careers including writing for the Gates Foundation, co-founding SMARTHINKING and authoring books on educational policy for the American Enterprise Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Beth Dumbauld, director of content, said, \u201cOnce in college, StraighterLine students are more likely to persist to a degree than those that didn\u2019t start with StraighterLine.\u201d Students can start college immediately and save thousands of dollars. Scholarships are available also.<\/p>\n<p>The number of online college courses is staggering.
