And, while enterprise-wide initiatives like compensation studies and benefits analyses will create an environment that makes retaining employees easier, it still comes down to how the employee feels about working for you, their leader.<\/p>\n<p>What can you do to impact whether your top performers stay or go?\u00a0 Rather than guessing what keeps them happy, why not ask them?\u00a0 Beverly Kaye and Sharon Jordan-Evans, in their 2002 classic, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Love-Em-Lose-Getting-Business\/dp\/160994884X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Love \u2018Em or Lose \u2018Em: Getting Good People to Stay<\/a><\/em>, suggest that managers conduct a \u201cstay interview\u201d to learn what it will take to keep the good ones. There\u2019s never been a better time for government leaders to employ this practice. And it\u2019s easy\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In a monthly or quarterly meeting with each employee, that doesn\u2019t need to last more than 15 or 20 minutes, ask questions like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you love about your job?<\/li>\n<li>If you were to win the lottery and resign, what would you miss the most?<\/li>\n<li>What about your job do you dread?<\/li>\n<li>What is one thing about your current job that makes you want to leave us?<\/li>\n<li>What is it that makes you proud to work here?<\/li>\n<li>If you had a magic wand, what would be the one thing you would change about<br \/>\nthis department?<\/li>\n<li>If you had to go back to a position in your past and stay for an extended period of<br \/>\ntime, which one would it be and why?<\/li>\n<li>When you tell your friends about working here, what do you tell them?<\/li>\n<li>What part of your job gives you the most satisfaction?<\/li>\n<li>What is the best day you\u2019ve had on this job and why?<\/li>\n<li>What was the most frustrating day on this job and why?<\/li>\n<li>What will keep you here?
