Bogies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/on-the-job\/leadership-on-the-links-birdies-bogies\/attachment\/leadership-7\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5086\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5086\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/leadership.jpg\" alt=\"leadership\" width=\"323\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/leadership.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/leadership-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/leadership-480x321.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 323px) 100vw, 323px\" \/><\/a>In Harvey Pennick\u2019s\u00a0<em>Little Red Book:\u00a0\u00a0Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf<\/em>, the author shares a story of a brief conversation with someone he met at his church.\u00a0\u00a0The story goes like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>A woman at church remarked to me, \u2018Harvey, that game you play doesn\u2019t make sense.\u00a0\u00a0You hit a ball 250 yards off the tee and it counts [as] one stroke, the same as for a three- or four-foot putt!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pennick himself admitted to the fellow churchgoer that many a golfer has long-been challenged to explain why\u00a0<em>all shots<\/em>\u00a0count the same in golf.\u00a0\u00a0And while most golfers will also admit some shots\u00a0<em>seem to count\u00a0<\/em>more, the fact remains that all shots count&#8211;and that in itself is a lesson we should all draw much from.<\/p>\n<p>In life, like in golf, everything we do actually does\u00a0<em>count<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0And when we pause and consider the frequency with which the \u2018little things\u2019 actually significantly fill our day, we soon realize that the little things are in fact every bit as important as the bigger actions we make.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go back to the golf analogy for a moment.\u00a0\u00a0A 250 yard shot off the tee requires much to accomplish:\u00a0\u00a0The player must assess the field laid out in front of him or her.\u00a0\u00a0The player then must consider their level of play, including their consistency in the use of one club or another, and they must not under- nor over-estimate their calculations.\u00a0\u00a0Too much club can be as damaging as too little; and failing to consider hazards that exist between the beginning and the end can lead to disastrous results.\u00a0\u00a0Most importantly, a well-calculated and executed shot must be capitalized upon by making that 4-foot shot that remains.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0What makes that next shot one that will be approached with confidence?\u00a0\u00a0Many golfers will tell you that practice and vision.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders will tell you the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>This is because the leader of an organization understands the importance of being able to support their teams by anticipating what the future may include.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0By creating a vision for opportunities for success after a significant stride by the organization has been made, the leader then ensures that the next step someone on that team takes will bring them all to a new level.\u00a0\u00a0Leaders help their colleagues continue to \u2018read\u2019 the surface and conditions of their environments, and teach their organizations to constantly remain prepared to make adjustments&#8211;even anticipate changes in direction&#8211;likely to occur before they all arrive to their intended destination.<\/p>\n<p>It becomes very clear as each of those steps and actions are taken to complete a project, program or assignment, that we must also periodically record our efforts.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is important, because we can learn much from our previous performances through benchmarking as well as assessments of our future performance in similar or new arenas.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the leader of the developing organization, like the dedicated golfer (see, \u201cRedundant Phrase\u201d), will find many opportunities to allow for those skills in need of improvement to be tested, re-evaluated, and developed again.\u00a0\u00a0The leader will also help colleagues to learn new scenarios to assess their progress.<\/p>\n<p>As the saying goes,\u00a0\u201cThe will to succeed is important, but what&#8217;s more important is the will to prepare.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0For the leader of the learning and progressing organization, successes found during preparation inevitably lead to larger successes during implementation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Harvey Pennick\u2019s\u00a0Little Red Book:\u00a0\u00a0Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf, the author shares a story of a brief conversation with someone he met at his church.\u00a0\u00a0The story goes like this: \u201cA woman at church remarked to me, \u2018Harvey, that game you play doesn\u2019t make sense.\u00a0\u00a0You hit a ball 250 yards off the tee [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":183,"featured_media":5086,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_cbd_carousel_blocks":"[]","_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[32],"tags":[8,38],"class_list":["post-5085","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-on-the-job","tag-leadership","tag-management-government-administration"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Leadership on the Links: Birdies &amp;
