That ordering matters \u2014 lead with what you offer, not where you’ve been.<\/p>\n If you’re targeting consulting specifically, your headline can be even more direct: “Federal Regulatory Consultant | Helping Healthcare Organizations Navigate CMS Compliance” tells a potential client exactly what they’re getting.<\/p>\n The profile photo \u2014 a small thing that matters<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nGovernment ID photos, agency headshots taken in fluorescent-lit conference rooms, and photos from a retirement ceremony are not LinkedIn profile photos. Use a current, professional headshot with a clean background. You don’t need a photographer \u2014 good natural light and a plain wall will do \u2014 but the photo should look like you’re available and engaged, not filing a form. Selfies also are not acceptable.<\/p>\n Senior government professionals sometimes resist this because it feels vain. It isn’t. In the private sector, your LinkedIn profile is your first impression in a visual medium. A strong headshot increases profile views significantly and signals that you take your professional presence seriously.<\/p>\n Your banner- where your brand becomes a visual presentation <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nPeople are sometimes surprised when I tell them that the banner also matters. It becomes a visual presentation for your brand. They are easy to create and there are cost-effective tools, such as Canva, to help you create an appropriate one.<\/p>\n The About section \u2014 where the real reframe happens<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nThis is the section most government professionals skip entirely or write as a longer version of their resume summary. Both are mistakes.<\/p>\n Your About section is a first-person narrative. It should read like a smart, accomplished person is speaking directly to someone they want to work with \u2014 not a bio written for a conference program or a congressional hearing.<\/p>\n A strong About section for a career-pivoting government professional does four things:<\/p>\n \n- Opens with a hook that names the problem you solve or the value you bring \u2014 not where you work<\/li>\n
- Describes your domain expertise and the types of organizations or challenges you’ve spent your career on<\/li>\n
- Translates one or two major accomplishments into outcomes-focused language<\/li>\n
- Closes with a clear signal of what you’re available for next<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Here’s the critical voice shift: write in first person (“I led…”, “My work focuses on…”), not third person. Third person in an About section reads as institutional and stiff \u2014 exactly the register you’re trying to move away from.<\/p>\n \n\n\n| \n Government-style<\/strong><\/p>\nSenior executive with 25 years of federal service. That’s what gets a consulting inquiry or a recruiter message.<\/p>\n The Experience section \u2014 translate, don’t transcribe<\/h4>\nYour Experience section is where the same reframing principles from your resume apply \u2014 but LinkedIn has its own specific conventions worth understanding.<\/p>\n Each role should include a two-to-three sentence description of the organization and your job, followed by three to five bullet points of your most significant accomplishments. That’s it. Not a full job description. Not KSAs. Not a list of everything you were responsible for.<\/p>\n The organization description matters more on LinkedIn than on a resume, because many private-sector readers won’t know what your agency or office does. A single sentence of context goes a long way:<\/p>\n \n- “The Office of Inspector General conducts independent oversight of a $900B annual budget across 11 major program areas” is more useful than “Department of Health and Human Services OIG.”<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
For accomplishments, use the same outcome-first framing covered in the resume post: what was the problem, what did you do, and what changed because of it?<\/p>\n One additional LinkedIn-specific tip: use the media attachment feature to add context. Annual reports you contributed to, public testimony, policy documents, or even a well-crafted bio from a speaking engagement can add credibility and specificity that text alone can’t.<\/p>\n Skills and endorsements \u2014 strategic, not comprehensive<\/h4>\nGovernment professionals often have a skills section that looks like a vocabulary list: “Policy Analysis,” “Budget Management,” “Stakeholder Engagement,” “Strategic Planning.” These are so generic they communicate almost nothing.<\/p>\n LinkedIn’s algorithm does use skills for search matching, so this section matters \u2014 but the goal is precision, not volume. Pick 10 to 15 skills that are specific to your domain and your target audience’s language.<\/p>\n If you’re in healthcare policy: “CMS Regulatory Compliance,” “Value-Based Care,” “Federal Health Policy” will surface you in more targeted searches than “Policy Analysis” alone. If you’re in defense acquisition: “FAR\/DFARS Compliance,” “Source Selection,” “Program Executive Office” signal expertise to people who understand the space.<\/p>\n Ask former colleagues and trusted connections to endorse your top five to seven skills. A handful of targeted endorsements from credible people is worth more than 50 endorsements for generic terms.<\/p>\n Recommendations \u2014 the section most people skip and shouldn’t<\/h4>\nLinkedIn recommendations are the closest thing the platform has to a reference check. For senior government professionals transitioning to the private sector, they serve an additional function: they show private-sector readers what it was actually like to work with you, in the voice of someone who knows.<\/p>\n Three to five recommendations are enough. Choose recommenders strategically:<\/p>\n \n- A former supervisor who can speak to your leadership and decision-making<\/li>\n
- A peer from another agency or a cross-sector partner who can speak to how you work with external stakeholders<\/li>\n
- If possible, someone who has already made a similar transition and can credibly connect your government experience to private-sector relevance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
When you ask for a recommendation, don’t make the person start from scratch. Send them a brief note that includes: what role you held, one or two accomplishments you’d like them to reference, and the types of opportunities you’re pursuing. - Comment meaningfully on three to five posts per week \u2014 not “Great post!” but a sentence or two that adds something<\/li>\n
- Connect intentionally \u2014 reach out to people at consulting firms, state government agencies, or companies you’re targeting, with a brief, specific note about why you’re connecting<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Content that works well for government-to-private-sector transitions: breaking down a regulatory change your audience doesn’t fully understand, sharing what you’ve learned about a specific challenge from the inside, or offering a perspective on how government decisions affect private organizations. This is the knowledge you spent years accumulating \u2014 it’s genuinely valuable, and it positions you as someone who can translate complexity, which is exactly what consulting clients and private employers want.<\/p>\n Five things to stop doing on LinkedIn immediately<\/h4>\n\n- Using “dedicated public servant” or any variation in your headline or About section \u2014 it signals government-only identity to the exact readers you need to reach<\/li>\n
- Listing every committee membership, working group, and interagency task force you’ve ever touched \u2014 depth over breadth, always<\/li>\n
- Writing in passive voice anywhere on your profile \u2014 “was responsible for,” “assisted in,” “supported the development of” all undercut your leadership presence<\/li>\n
- Leaving your contact information or Open to Work settings blank \u2014 if you’re in transition, make it easy for the right people to find and reach you<\/li>\n
- Connecting without a note \u2014 at the senior level, every connection request should include a brief, specific sentence about why you’re reaching out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The bottom line<\/h4>\nYour LinkedIn profile is not a digital filing cabinet for your career history.
