At that meeting,\u00a0<span class=\"\">senior leaders of their division shared upcoming plans for layoffs to cut expenses.\u00a0<\/span>The senior leaders explained that they would announce the plan in a week, once the details were ironed out.\u00a0<span class=\"\">The senior leaders closed the meeting with the demand that nothing be said about the upcoming layoffs.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">One supervisor said to the other, \u201cWhat are we going to do?\u00a0<span class=\"\">We can\u2019t tell our direct reports what we know<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Told to Play Dumb<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The concerned supervisor \u2013 not as tenured as the supervisor he was talking to \u2013 said,\u00a0<span class=\"\">\u201cWhen something like this gets announced, my team members are convinced that I knew what was coming. Sometimes I do \u2013 but like at this meeting, I\u2019ve been told to \u2018play dumb.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">I cannot pretend to understand all the dynamics at play in every organization on the planet. However, I am quite confident that\u00a0<span class=\"\">effective, servant leaders do not lie. Nor do they ask their managers to lie.\u00a0<\/span>The costs are simply too great.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Lies Create a House of Cards<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\">\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #555555;\">Remember building little structures with playing cards? By pulling one or two key cards, the whole thing collapsed. Lies are like those key cards. If leaders lie, it\u2019s only a matter of time before those lies are discovered. It may take weeks or months or years, but the truth typically comes to light.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\">\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span style=\"color: #555555;\">When a leader\u2019s lies are<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0discovered, those\u00a0<span class=\"\">lies erode<\/span>:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Trust<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Team members learn that they cannot trust what those leaders tell them. If some of what they hear turns out to be untrue, they quickly go to the assumption that \u201ceverything we hear is a lie.\u201d That\u00a0<span class=\"\">perception becomes fact<\/span>\u00a0to those players.<\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Respect<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Team members feel disrespected because leaders have not trusted them with the truth.\u00a0<span class=\"\">When key plans, decisions, and actions are withheld from employees, respect disappears.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Credibility<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A leaders\u2019 plans, decisions, and actions tell team members exactly what the leaders\u2019 values are. If those leaders do not serve others consistently and don\u2019t do what they say they will do, their credibility is lost.\u00a0<span class=\"\">Un-credible leaders inspire fear and discontent, not confidence and accomplishment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Without trust, respect, and credibility, team members have no reason to apply their discretionary energy to workplace projects, goals, and tasks.<\/span>\u00a0Lies can take years to recover from \u2013 if a leader can recover, at all.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">Be Honest &amp; Transparent<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">One lie spawns ten other lies which support the first. It gets complicated to keep track of who was told what!\u00a0<span class=\"\">Don\u2019t spend your time juggling lies &#8211; spend your time being honest and transparent.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Honesty &amp; transparency means you let your team know what the context is for your plans, decisions, and actions.<\/span>\u00a0Educate others about the issues and opportunities before you and before the team. Do so regularly, not immediately before a tough decision gets announced.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Education about the business issues and opportunities you face enables talented team members to put their brains to work. T<\/span>hey may surprise you with a different way to solve problems with less negative impact on your workforce, customers, or citizens.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">If you can\u2019t be honest &amp; transparent \u2013 and there are scenarios where you cannot disclose details of every possibility \u2013 what should you do? The conversation between the two supervisors ended when the more experienced supervisor put his hand on the shoulder of the concerned supervisor and said, \u201c<span class=\"\">I tell them what I can.<\/span>\u00a0If I\u2019ve been told that I cannot tell details,\u00a0<span class=\"\">I explain that I\u2019ve not been given the authority to\u00a0\u00a0disclose what our leaders are considering.<\/span>\u00a0My team may not be happy about it, but at least I\u2019m not saying \u2018I don\u2019t know\u2019 \u2013 which is a lie.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">I couldn\u2019t have said it better.\u00a0<strong class=\"\">What is your experience with untruths in the workplace?
