You managed a $40M program. You navigated federal procurement regulations that most people can’t even pronounce. You led cross-agency initiatives that required more diplomacy than half of the private sector’s “leadership” roles combined.<\/p>\n

And yet, when you send your resume to a private sector recruiter, it lands with a thud.<\/p>\n

Here’s the truth I tell every displaced public servant I work with: your experience isn’t the problem. Your translation is.<\/p>\n

The Real Barrier Isn’t Your Resume\u2014It’s the Language Gap<\/h4>\n

Government work has its own dialect. GS levels, program authorizations, interagency coordination, compliance frameworks\u2014it’s a language built for people who already understand the system. But a hiring manager at a mid-size logistics company or a healthcare startup doesn’t speak that dialect. When they read “managed program compliance under federal acquisition regulations,” they don’t see a rigorous, high-stakes operator. They see jargon they’d have to Google.<\/p>\n

This is where so many talented former public servants get stuck. Not because they lack skills\u2014because they’re describing those skills in a language that doesn’t land outside the building they used to work in.<\/p>\n

Three Translations That Change Everything<\/h4>\n

“Program management” becomes “P&L-adjacent operational leadership.” If you managed budgets, timelines, staffing, and outcomes for a government program, you were functionally running a business unit. Private sector employers care about scope, budget size, team size, and measurable outcomes. Lead with those numbers, not your program’s official title.<\/p>\n

“Stakeholder coordination” becomes “cross-functional influence without authority.” Anyone who has navigated interagency politics, congressional inquiries, or multi-department initiatives has mastered something private sector companies pay a premium for: getting people who don’t report to you to move in the same direction. Name it that way.<\/p>\n

“Regulatory compliance” becomes “risk management and operational resilience.” You didn’t just follow rules. You protected an organization from legal, financial, and reputational exposure\u2014often under public scrutiny most private sector employees never face. That’s risk management, full stop.<\/p>\n

A Quick Exercise<\/h4>\n

Take one bullet point from your current Resume\u2014the one that feels the most “government.” Ask yourself three questions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • What business outcome did this actually drive? (Cost savings, risk reduction, efficiency, revenue protection?)<\/li>\n
  • What would a private sector title for this responsibility be?\u2019<\/li>\n
  • What number (amount, percentage) can I attach to it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Rewrite the bullet using only the answers to those three questions. No agency names. No acronyms. Just outcomes, scope, and impact.<\/p>\n

    You’re Not Starting Over. You’re Repositioning.<\/h4>\n

    I’ve walked this exact path myself\u2014leaving a role where I felt boxed in by structures I didn’t build and having to learn how to describe my own value in a language a different audience could actually hear. It’s disorienting at first. It also, eventually, becomes the thing that makes your positioning sharper than it ever was inside the system.<\/p>\n

    You didn’t spend years in public service to be overlooked now. You spent them building exactly the kind of judgment, resilience, and operational range that private sector employers say they can’t find enough of. They just need it handed to them in a language they recognize.<\/p>\n

    That translation work is where the real career pivot begins.<\/h4>\n
