Whenever someone tells me they\u2019re preparing for a job interview, I always ask, \u201cWhat questions are you planning to ask?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

More often than not, I\u2019m met with a puzzled look and a response like, \u201cI\u2019m the one being interviewed. They\u2019ll be asking the questions. My job is to give great answers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I follow up with another question\u2014admittedly, a bit of a leading one: \u201cDid you know that candidates who ask thoughtful, insightful questions are often perceived as more qualified than those who simply provide great answers?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

My friend, Mark Goulston<\/a>, in his book, “Just Listen”<\/a> shared this story:<\/p>\n

My daughter, preparing to interview with a senior manager at a Wall Street financial firm, asked me, \u201cWhat question could I ask that would help me stand out from the crowd?\u201d An hour and a half later, she beeped me in the middle of a meeting and excitedly said, \u201cDad, I asked him the question you suggested, and he reacted exactly like you said he would. He glanced up toward the ceiling for a moment and said, \u2018That\u2019s a great question and something I don\u2019t have an answer to but should.\u2019 He really connected with me after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what my daughter said to earn this interviewer\u2019s interest. When he asked her if she had a question, she responded with this:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like you to imagine it\u2019s a year from now, and you and your bosses are reviewing the people you\u2019ve hired this year\u2014and when it comes to this position, they say, \u2018Get us ten more like that one. That person was one of the best hires we\u2019ve had in a long time.\u2019 Can you tell me what that person did for her and you to get such a rave review?\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n

I knew the question would work. I also told my daughter how she\u2019d know it worked: by watching the interviewer\u2019s eyes. Because at the moment he glanced up and away, she\u2019d know she\u2019d moved him from transaction to transformation.<\/p>\n
