{"id":5200,"date":"2015-12-10T17:16:10","date_gmt":"2015-12-11T01:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=5200"},"modified":"2015-12-10T17:16:11","modified_gmt":"2015-12-11T01:16:11","slug":"the-root-of-all-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/the-root-of-all-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"The Root of All Diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/the-root-of-all-diversity\/attachment\/diversity-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-5201\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diversity.jpg\" alt=\"diversity\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diversity.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diversity-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/diversity-480x319.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a>As 2015 reluctantly winds down to its final days, I find a highly-charged momentum continues on a topic that has become and will seemingly remain among the most important objectives of any organization and its leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Across the country, from companies to communities to colleges, the dialog of how to pursue diversity and inclusivity in genuine, sincere, demonstrative and sustainable forms continues to lead and perhaps dominate many settings.\u00a0\u00a0One particular problem is while organizations, institutions and even communities may indeed seek and actually achieve diversity, they find a tremendous additional challenge in sustaining this demonstrated capacity and to actually be inclusive of all of their constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>I ask you to consider for a moment what exactly do many organizations actually mean when they say they want to be\u00a0<em>diverse<\/em>?\u00a0\u00a0If we follow the practical process of checking our dictionaries, we\u2019d immediately re-discover that among the definitions offered, the phrase \u2018unlikeness\u2019 appears.<\/p>\n<h4>That could be part of the problem<\/h4>\n<p>To be \u2018unlike\u2019 others around you can, of course, set a very different tone even under the best of circumstances because, more often than not, the mere recognition of being unlike most others is that you\u2019re less a part of them\u2014whoever \u2018they\u2019 may be.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019m not even sure what the root word of diversity is, but I know the word \u201cdivide\u201d can\u2019t be too far away.\u00a0\u00a0And as we know\u2014when we divide\u2014we separate.<\/p>\n<h4>That\u2019s not very\u00a0<em>inclusive<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>As an alternative, I propose a slightly different model of thinking.\u00a0\u00a0The purpose of seeking diversity in an organization is to harness the variety of talents, experiences and perspectives that provide for a far richer and stronger assembly of assets.\u00a0\u00a0The difference isn\u2019t the difference; it\u2019s the power that comes from<em>\u00a0difference.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>That is what I sense so many leaders and organizations are really seeking when they champion \u2018diversity and inclusivity\u2019:\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0<strong>power of difference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As leaders, we must aggressively pursue higher powers of difference; create opportunities to expand our pooled talents and to enrich the work we share with our teams.\u00a0\u00a0To achieve inclusivity, we may need to ever-so-subtly shift our paradigm of what it means to be diverse and be willing to seek new ways to communicate our constant quest to build our power through difference.\u00a0\u00a0We as leaders must recognize the available attraction and influence through honest demonstrations and actions of our organizations and communities that can only be accomplished through the variety of people we bring to our organizations.<\/p>\n<p>We owe it to our organizations to lead our teams to levels of personal and group success that illustrate real involvement and are attributable to as many members as possible.\u00a0\u00a0We owe it to our communities to grow in ways that demonstrate a dedicated, sustainable and genuine value of the power that comes from what makes us different\u2014a power that we intentionally share and give freely\u2014and to value, understand and dedicate ourselves to preserving those differences in order to preserve and build the power that will allow us all to become greater together.\u00a0\u00a0And, we owe all these things to the principles we openly discuss, describe, define and demand.<\/p>\n<p>The power of difference, in the end, is not a new source of making things possible.\u00a0\u00a0It is the essential ingredient to ensuring the future we&#8217;ll share.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As 2015 reluctantly winds down to its final days, I find a highly-charged momentum continues on a topic that has become and will seemingly remain among the most important objectives of any organization and its leaders. A Past President of the California Association of Councils of Governments, Stan is a former Mayor of the City of Corona (CA) and was a member of its City Council from 2006-2014; and is Police Chief Emeritus of California State University, Long Beach. Stan enjoys traveling throughout the United States, reading\u2013particularly on the subject of philosophy\u2013and music. Stan and his wife of 29 years, Michell, have eight children, ages 11-25.
