what you\u2019re doing, you can end up down some deep rabbit holes.\u00a0 Started 10 years ago to share videos online, YouTube is now the realm of the likes of Jimmy Fallon and \u201cYouTube Stars,\u201d who do nothing but create videos to make money.<\/p>\n<p>Stars like Fallon and organizations like the Associated Press are great at using YouTube to generate interest in their brands and drive traffic to their sites.\u00a0 In Fallon\u2019s case, his YouTube channel drives viewers to his ultimate product, the Tonight Show.<\/p>\n<p>For the government, YouTube is a little different.\u00a0 Unlike Facebook or Twitter, where the primary purposes are conversations and information sharing, YouTube is where you can get creative.\u00a0 With intent.<\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t Forget the Plan<\/h2>\n<p>Governments are the ultimate social businesses.\u00a0 The public is the customer, and you can use the Facebook and Twitter accounts you\u2019ve already started to <a href=\"http:\/\/businessonline.villanova.edu\/resources\/articles\/socialmedia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">engage in social listening to better understand how to proceed<\/a> with your YouTube plan.\u00a0 The data provided via Facebook and Twitter will guide you in a few ways.<\/p>\n<p>It will help you zero in on an audience.\u00a0 It will also help you analyze what that audience wants to see on your YouTube channels.\u00a0 Yes, channels.<\/p>\n<p>Before you plan all your content and everything else, understand that it will serve your organization best if you have more than one channel, starting with one municipal-wide channel.\u00a0 Then look at your broader units, like Planning and Zoning and Parks and Recreation.\u00a0 Units like these and your Fire or Police Departments are great starts for YouTube channels.<\/p>\n<p>These are units that can easily be set up on YouTube to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aabacosmallbusiness.com\/advisor\/creating-successful-youtube-channel-secrets-unveiled-174511136.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">educate with content<\/a>.\u00a0 They are likely already doing so via their Facebook and Twitter platforms because it\u2019s part of what they do every day.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve established the units that will have channels, it\u2019s time to pick content managers and creators.\u00a0 In order to mitigate chaos, keep the managers to a minimum.\u00a0 One content manager per channel is enough; but choose wisely.<\/p>\n<p>Choose content managers and creators who can produce and edit content on a regular basis.\u00a0 The larger the business unit, the more often content should be posted.\u00a0 If the channel doesn\u2019t belong to your Arts department, look for your most creative employees.\u00a0 These are your creators.\u00a0 Content managers should be highly organized and diligent tech savvy employees who can stay on top of the creative geniuses in your departments.<\/p>\n<h2>Get Purposefully Creative<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of that creativity, be sure that it too sticks to your overall plan.\u00a0 Just as you are deliberate in the channels you create, be deliberate in the content as well.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinebusiness.northeastern.edu\/resources-mba\/infographics-mba\/trends-that-are-changing-the-way-brands-market-to-consumers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Content creation is one of the most important factors in marketing<\/a> for any brand, and YouTube content can be as important as the words on a blog.<\/p>\n<p>Keep the content short and informative but fun at the same time.\u00a0 Don\u2019t just edit snippets of the P&amp;Z Commission\u2019s latest meeting and post in on their channel.\u00a0 Ask a Public Information Officer to interview the newest member of the Commission about her first few months\u2019 tenure.\u00a0 Create short clips about the projects that are going before the Commission the next time it meets.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that YouTube, owned by Google, is a search engine in and of itself.\u00a0 When you are titling your videos and writing descriptions, think about keywords your public will be using to find information.\u00a0 Your videos should be creative but easy to find.<\/p>\n<p>As you launch your YouTube channels, do so slowly.\u00a0 Start with your units that interact most often with the public.\u00a0 Choose content that answers questions your analytics have shown your public wants answered.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2010\/04\/26\/branded-youtube-channel\/#zJOOo8t40iqm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">YouTube channels should grow organically<\/a>.\u00a0 This will make them and you successful.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t forget to connect your channels to their corresponding Facebook and Twitter accounts, too.\u00a0 Otherwise, all this connectivity will be for naught.\u00a0 Cross-platform shares are key to any social business, and your municipality is no
