{"id":5372,"date":"2016-02-07T17:19:57","date_gmt":"2016-02-08T01:19:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=5372"},"modified":"2016-02-07T17:19:59","modified_gmt":"2016-02-08T01:19:59","slug":"everyday-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/education\/everyday-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyday Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/education\/everyday-innovation\/attachment\/innovation\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5373\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-5373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/innovation.jpg\" alt=\"innovation\" width=\"465\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/innovation.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/innovation-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/innovation-480x318.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 465px) 100vw, 465px\" \/><\/a>We met for breakfast in the antique Foshay Tower (now a W Hotel) in Minneapolis.\u00a0 My breakfast guest was the renowned cartoonist, John Bush.\u00a0 Now deceased, his syndicated cartoons were at that time white-hot.\u00a0 I was there to learn how his mind worked since my co-author, Ron Zemke, and I were in search of someone to illustrate our new business book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s sit at the table by the window so we can see the people in the street,\u201d he suggested after we met.\u00a0 When the waitress came to take our order John had not even glanced at his menu.\u00a0 \u201cJust bring me something out of the ordinary,\u201d John requested. The waitress started to tell him some of the more off-the-beaten-path menu items and John stopped her.\u00a0 \u201cJust surprise me!\u201d\u00a0 He made my two eggs over easy with toast and bacon seem plain vanilla!<\/p>\n<p>After a few typical questions, I asked how he came up with cartoon ideas.\u00a0 \u201cThe cool ideas are everywhere,\u201d he said. \u201cI just pick something and daydream about what it might be like.\u00a0 You have to let it work you as much as you making it work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive me an example,\u201d I probed.\u00a0 John smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, give me a subject, any subject, and let me see where it wants me to take it,\u201d John proposed.\u00a0 I was struck by how he spoke of ideas as if they were good friends with a mind of their own.\u00a0 \u201cHow about a cartoon about a dog?\u201d I suggested.\u00a0 A man was at that moment walking by our street side window with a beagle on a leash.\u00a0 John took out his drawing pad like a kid opening a new box of crayons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy don\u2019t we put the dog in a restaurant like this one having breakfast with his new owner,\u201d John recommended with passion welling up in his countenance.\u00a0 As he began to draw, the woman at the table nearby ordered a cappuccino.\u00a0 \u201cAha,\u201d said John.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s have the dog drinking a cappuccino!\u201d\u00a0 And with that, his drawing pen portrayed the dog with lots of steamed-milk foam on his mouth.<\/p>\n<p>With a wide-eyed look he exclaimed, \u201cDone!\u00a0 All we need is a caption; I think I have just the one!\u201d\u00a0 He penciled in the lines the dog in the cartoon was speaking to his owner seated across from him at a restaurant table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy last owner wouldn\u2019t let me order this, said it made me look crazy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I howled.\u00a0 \u201cThat is hilarious,\u201d I said.\u00a0 But my quest for symmetry forced me to continue:\u00a0 \u201cBut, why not have the caption say, \u2018said it made me look mad?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I got the best creativity lesson of all.\u00a0 \u201cThe creative part of humor,\u201d John stated, \u201cis to let the viewer fill in the pattern.\u00a0 There would be little to \u2018get\u2019 if you made it totally obvious.\u00a0 It needs to pop in the viewer\u2019s mind like the punch line of a joke.\u201d\u00a0 We hired John Bush!\u00a0 He would ultimately illustrate several of our knock your socks off service books.<\/p>\n<p>Innovative service requires the application of creativity and ingenuity. But, you\u2019re not innovative or creative, you say?\u00a0 Perhaps you have just not been looking at the right source.\u00a0 What if you picked something random and applied it to your service experience?\u00a0 John Bush used a dog walking by.<\/p>\n<p>What if you chose a different set of eyes to examine what you are seeking to solve?\u00a0 What would a group of first graders suggest? What would Walt Disney do?\u00a0 What if you turned your problem into a play, a food, a celebration, the combinations are endless.\u00a0 What if you made your service experience smaller, done alone, done in reverse, done with a guide, greener, more romantic, slower, with elegance, easier, more inclusive, faster, done remotely\u2026keep going!<\/p>\n<p>Innovative happens when you effortlessly ignore mind-limiting barriers and laugh at conventions that are mere form. Become friends of the bizarre; partners with the uncommon.\u00a0 It happens when you relax with your issue and let it \u201cplay us\u201d instead of seeking to control it.\u00a0 It appears when you engage others in the search\u2014a customer, a colleague or someone unrelated to your problem.
