Is the only metric that matters \u201cemployee productivity?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown workplaces are often dismal places to be for us humans.<\/p>\n<p>24\/7 Wall Street identified 2016\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/247wallst.com\/special-report\/2016\/06\/10\/the-worst-companies-to-work-for-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>worst companies to work for<\/strong><\/a> by analyzing employee ratings on Glassdoor.com. The worst three? Forever 21, Family Dollar, and Express Scripts each with an overall score of 2.5 on a five-point scale.<\/p>\n<p>If both inspiration and productivity are important, senior leaders must measure, monitor and reward workplace interactions and the treatment of employees, not just results. And the trend seems to be improving.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/hr-today\/trends-and-forecasting\/research-and-surveys\/pages\/job-satisfaction-and-engagement-report-revitalizing-changing-workforce.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>2016 SHRM engagement study<\/strong><\/a> found that 88% of employees are satisfied overall with their job, the highest it\u2019s been in a decade. That\u2019s encouraging, yet there remains work to be done.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/01\/opinion\/sunday\/why-you-hate-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>2014 <\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/01\/opinion\/sunday\/why-you-hate-work.html\"><strong><em>New York Times<\/em><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/06\/01\/opinion\/sunday\/why-you-hate-work.html\"><strong> article<\/strong><\/a> titled, &#8220;Why You Hate Work,&#8221; featured insights from three studies by The Energy Project.<\/p>\n<p>Their studies found that employees are much more satisfied and productive when four of their core needs are met:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>physical<\/strong> (with regular opportunities to renew and recharge at work),<\/li>\n<li><strong>emotional<\/strong> (by feeling valued for their contributions),<\/li>\n<li><strong>mental<\/strong> (by having the opportunity to focus on their most important tasks and define when and where they get their work done),<\/li>\n<li><strong>spiritual<\/strong> (by doing more of what they do best and by feeling connected to a higher purpose).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Energy Project studied over 12,000 global workers and found that 70%\u00a0 do not have regular time for creative or strategic thinking; only 18% of respondents do. 66% do not have the ability to focus on one thing at a time; 21% do. 50% do not experience meaning and significance at work; 36% do.<\/p>\n<p>Despite \u201coverall\u201d satisfaction, there appears to be work to be done, proven by an experience a colleague had.\u00a0 She was hired to conduct a series of classes at a workpalce, and during a game, asked a question of one employee, \u201cWhat fun thing did you do this summer?\u201d \u201cNothing really.\u201d \u201cWell what do activity do you like to do?\u201d \u201cAnything that isn\u2019t here.\u201d\u00a0 That employee represents thousands that probably feel the same way. Leaders have the job of creating productive, MEANINGFUL work environments, starting with treating employees with dignity, trust and respect&#8211;every time.<\/p>\n<p>How can leaders build engagement, service, and results and profits? By <a href=\"http:\/\/thecultureengine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>implementing an organizational constitution<\/strong><\/a> that outlines their team or company&#8217;s present day purpose, values and behaviors, strategies, and goals.<\/p>\n<p>If they don&#8217;t do that, they&#8217;ll get dismal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s your work environment like?
