\"success\"Twenty-eight eyes looked at me skeptically. They were convinced the task I had outlined for their strategy session was beyond their reach. \u201cJust too hard,\u201d they explained. \u201cI\u2019m not that creative,\u201d insisted another.<\/p>\n

My own confidence crumbled a bit. The exercise had worked in other contexts, but this industry was untried in my experience. What if they were right? Firmly shutting down the doubts of my unconvinced inner voice, I mustered up a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course you can do this! I\u2019ve never seen this approach fail. (A true statement). You\u2019ve totally got this. Now let\u2019s talk about where you\u2019re stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still uncertain, a few pairs of eyes softened. I could see the flicker of possibility beginning to take hold. I also knew I needed to diffuse the scene, 14 doubters against one believer were not good odds.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I get stuck like this, I often find it useful to take a walk,\u201d I offered. \u201cIf anyone wants to take a lap around this beautiful hotel to think, that\u2019s just fine. If you\u2019re ready to bounce your ideas off someone else, it may be helpful to talk it through with your colleague. And, I\u2019ll be over here and would love to talk with anyone one-on-one.\u201d<\/p>\n

People began to move. A few took a walk. Others paired up. I held a few consultations, where we explored what they were most afraid of.<\/p>\n

When we regrouped, they nailed it. Not just in a hammer and nail sort of way. They nailed it with all the impact of an electric nail gun. In fact, that session was one of the most powerful I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n

5 Ways to Encourage Your Team Toward Success<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Let Your Confidence Shine <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Be confident in the mission. Be confident in the team. Be confident in the power of discomfort.\u00a0Don\u2019t articulate\u00a0your own self-doubt. That\u2019s a morale killer and not a sign of your humility.<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Divide and Encourage<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      It\u2019s easier to stay stuck when you\u2019re surrounded by \u201cstuckness.\u201d You\u2019ll find that team members aren\u2019t necessarily hung up in the same place or for the same reasons. Find a way to separate the naysayers.<\/p>\n

      1. Build on Past Success<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Ask your team members to recall a time they\u2019ve been successful in a similar situation. Start from a confident place. \u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019ve done well in comparable situations in the past. Can you tell me about a time \u2026 what did you do \u2026 what made it successful?\u201d<\/p>\n

        1. Be the Bridge to Success <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Be available. Listen. Ask provocative questions that lead them to success.<\/p>\n

          1. Help Them Identify Their Fears<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            \u201cWhat\u2019s the worst thing that could happen here?\u201d I asked one woman.<\/p>\n

            \u201cI might get emotional,\u201d she confided.<\/p>\n

            \u201cOkay that\u2019s understandable,\u201d I said matter-of-factly. \u201cEmotional as in a verklempt<\/em> type of choking up,\u00a0or a full-on wailing and gnashing of teeth?\u201d<\/p>\n

            She laughed.\u00a0\u201cNah, it won\u2019t be that bad.\u201d<\/p>\n

            When she shared her story with the team, she wasn\u2019t the one who cried. Message received. Teams need encouragement to take little risks that feel big. Small risks lead to brave steps which lead to bold work, and ultimately create breakthrough results. Encourage them. Please. The world needs more brave doers.<\/p>\n
