\"team-building\"In the early days of my career I had many mentors, some formal and some informal.\u00a0 One thing was for certain: I learned a little something from everybody regarding team building.<\/p>\n

From some, I learned very specific lessons on how not to treat people or how not to lead people.\u00a0 From others, I learned how people are at the center of all of our individual and group successes.<\/p>\n

I watched two distinct theories play out; some subscribed to the \u2018team building\u2019 approach while others believed in the strategy of building a team<\/em>.\u00a0 The difference was lost to me at first, but as I grew by navigating my own leadership trials, I have come to fully understand the difference, and in fact, I can appreciate additional nuances to both approaches.<\/p>\n

Team building, I have come to understand, is the continuous process of picking the best performers for your team. Much like building an all-star baseball team, this is often considered the most efficient method.\u00a0 You simply pick the best pitcher, catcher, fielders, hitters, etc. and you will have a great producing team. The theory in assembling an organization in this way is that there will be less time spent on training and personnel issues, so productivity will be maximized with less effort.<\/p>\n

Building a team, on the other hand, is the art of finding the right person for the right position, regardless of whether or not their specific skill set is aligned with what you are currently looking for.\u00a0 One example would be a football team that is drafting the best available athlete–even though that individual might be a punter–with the intention of making them a linebacker, simply because these coaches believe the best athletes are coachable and possess superior physical skills and an aptitude for the game that should be easily transitioned to a new role.\u00a0 This approach undoubtedly calls for much more interaction early on, with some expectation of trial and error as the new member adjusts to the new role and responsibilities.<\/p>\n

These two very different approaches each have opportunities for success, but what determines which approach is better for our<\/em> organizations?\u00a0 This is where the nuances become important.<\/p>\n

I have a tremendous employee who is a star in their current position.\u00a0 As I employ the team building process, I want to choose this person for a supervisory role, assuming it will be an easy transition.\u00a0 But when promotion occurs, they struggle mightily and I am left wondering what happened to my all-star.\u00a0 In an effort to help them, I switch to \u2018building a team\u2019 mode, and spend time trying to develop the individual through coaching, training, and mentoring, I still cannot capture the same level of performance displayed in their previous role.<\/p>\n

Sound familiar?\u00a0 If it does, you may have approached similar challenges much like I did.\u00a0 What I\u2019ve learned from this is for team building to work, I must build a team designed to grow with me.<\/p>\n

The head coach of the New England patriots provides a great example<\/a> of the subtleties within each philosophy.\u00a0 It is difficult to argue against the success this team has enjoyed over the last decade, and yet Bill Belichik does not recruit the best overall athlete or the best athlete at their given position.\u00a0 Instead, he recruits athletes who specifically compliment one other within the system he has designed, and a system in which he himself has developed.\u00a0 In return, the fine-tuning that has been made over the last decade reaffirms the success of the organization and the particular manner in which it seeks to perform; framing the opportunity for the selected player in very simple terms:\u00a0 If you don\u2019t fit in the system you don\u2019t make it, regardless of your athletic ability.<\/p>\n

This illustrates the power of a hybrid model incorporating from both the team building<\/em> and building a team<\/em> philosophies.\u00a0 Organizational success supersedes individual achievement and requires more than athletic ability or talent.\u00a0 \u00a0It requires humility and a commitment to a greater purpose. \u00a0\u00a0In the last decade, rarely has an individual player left the Patriots organization and enjoyed similar success elsewhere. This is attributed testimony to the system and the selection and implementation of the right people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Randy obtained his Bachelor\u2019s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Cal Poly University and is a graduate of The University of Southern California\u2019s Delinquency Control Institute. Randy believes that learning is a lifelong endeavor and he continues to learn from his colleagues and the community he serves. He believes that solving problems is the core of community policing and his motto is, \u201cNever be so constrained by your job description that you stop looking for ways to say yes; if you must say no, say it with compassion for the customer\u2019s crisis, real or perceived, and provide options\u201d. He began his career in 1986 at the University of Southern California. In his 33 years of campus law enforcement he has had the opportunity to partner with many diverse groups to solve problems within the local community, including building a house in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity as part of a community policing outreach. He has served as President for The International Association of Campus Law enforcement Administrators (IACLEA); President of The California College and University Police Chief\u2019s Association (CCUPCA); Chair of the Board for Crime Survivors; he is member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); The American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS); and The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP).
