{"id":6373,"date":"2017-02-08T18:02:00","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T02:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=6373"},"modified":"2017-02-14T14:01:01","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T22:01:01","slug":"the-word-is-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/about-gov\/education\/the-word-is-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"The Word is Culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in January 2015, Merriam-Webster selected \u201c<strong>culture<\/strong>\u201d as their word of the year for 2014.\u00a0 Our of more than 100 million queries on their website each month and a similar number on the company&#8217;s app, &#8220;culture&#8221; increased by 15 percent increase this year over the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of workplace culture has continued to grow. I see it in my work and am always encouraged by companies who want to improve the culture at their workplace, because <strong>culture matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Culture drives everything that happens in organizations, good or bad. It doesn\u2019t take long to sense a company culture. Sometimes you discern it within minutes of walking in the door!<\/p>\n<p>Many studies have demonstrated how organizational culture affects employee engagement &#8211; for better or worse.\u00a0 One report from TinyPulse\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinyhr.com\/2014-employee-engagement-organizational-culture-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>TinyPulse\u2019s 2014 employee engagement report<\/strong><\/a>) identified vital trends that impact today\u2019s workplace. Their findings are not pretty!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Over half of all employees do not feel they have a strong work culture.<\/li>\n<li>Almost half of employees are dissatisfied with their direct boss.<\/li>\n<li>The majority of employees do not see opportunities for professional growth.<\/li>\n<li>A small minority of employees feel strongly valued at work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The low level of employee satisfaction and engagement revealed in this research is startling. No wonder <a href=\"http:\/\/drivingresultsthroughculture.com\/wordpress\/wp-admin\/is-your-top-talent-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>top talent<\/strong><\/a> is looking for more inspiring jobs in the improving economy. This type of snapshot demands prompt action by leaders, but the reality is that most leaders have little experience with culture creation or culture change. They&#8217;ve rarely <em>seen<\/em> successful culture change, much less <em>led<\/em> one!<\/p>\n<p>What can leaders do to reverse this trend and build a culture where employees demonstrate mutual trust, respect, and dignity to one another? They need to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create clear performance standards<\/li>\n<li>Establish clear values expectations<\/li>\n<li>Hold everyone accountable for both<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tool that brings this all together is an organizational constitution. This is a formal statement that outlines your team (or department or company\u2019s)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Present day purpose (reason for being) &#8211; this sets the direction for plans, decisions and actions<\/li>\n<li>Values and behaviors &#8211; this defines what a \u201cgood citizen\u201d looks like<\/li>\n<li>Strategies and goals &#8211; these are specific performance expectations that will be monitored and rewarded<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The greatest need for clarification, education and modeling usually comes in the \u201cvalues and behaviors\u201d portion.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t wait. Create a team foundation of great performance and great values with an organizational constitution.
