\"016548102_Job<\/a>Finding a job you love and pursuing it for a personally fulfilling and financially rewarding career is a huge challenge in today\u2019s highly competitive world.\u00a0 However, it is still possible if you follow some basic principles.\u00a0 Here are a few of the most important ones for finding a job you love:<\/p>\n

  1. Define your ideal job and career goal<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Too many career\/job searches are \u201creactive\u201d to advertised opportunities with no frame of reference from which to evaluate alternatives.\u00a0 Before you start your career\/job search, define your ideal job in terms of industry, government, or non-profit and the position you aspire to.\u00a0 Go ahead, define utopia!\u00a0 Don\u2019t be bashful or set artificial limits on yourself at the beginning. \u00a0It may help you to think about what type of person you are:\u00a0 introvert vs. extrovert, conservative vs. risk-taker, etc. (a personality test such as Myers-Briggs may give you some insights).<\/li>\n
  2. Select your targets<\/i><\/b>. Within your ideal job description, identify organizations that fit your criteria.\u00a0 Don\u2019t restrict yourself to those which are currently hiring.\u00a0 Select 10-15 organizations as your \u201ctargets\u201d and get ready to put a \u201cfull court press\u201d on them.<\/li>\n
  3. Customize your approach<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Forget the generic resume.\u00a0 Tailor each application and resume to the individual organization you are approaching.\u00a0 Describe why you are interested in specifically joining it and how you think you can help it.\u00a0 Your resume should be as much about the organization as it is about you, and should show you have done your homework.\u00a0 This requires self-reflection as to why you really want to join it and a lot of careful research about the organization\u2019s products, services, ideals, and key people.\u00a0 Send hard copies of your resume to key people within the organization, even if e\u2011mail is the only requested response.\u00a0 All of these things will help to differentiate you from other candidates.<\/li>\n
  4. Be flexible<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Be open to geographic location, starting position, and starting salary.\u00a0 Getting any job with the right organization is much better than just getting a job with any organization.\u00a0 Consider a non-paid internship; it will get you in the door.\u00a0 What is there to lose if you don\u2019t currently have a job?<\/li>\n
  5. Interviewing<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Do your homework on the organization and its people, values, and goals before the interview.\u00a0 Listen carefully to the questions, and answer briefly and to the point.\u00a0 Long, rambling answers are an interview killer.\u00a0 Relax! The interviewer has power in this situation but is still a person like you.\u00a0 Ask thoughtful questions about the interviewer\u2019s own goals and what will be expected of you, not just questions which reflect your own job needs or preferences.<\/li>\n
  6. Persistence<\/i><\/b>.\u00a0 Always follow up interviews with thank you letters, again emphasizing your strong desire to join that particular organization.\u00a0 Develop some \u201cduck feathers\u201d (they repel water) to handle any rejections.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean you aren\u2019t worthwhile; you just didn\u2019t fit at this time.\u00a0 Keep following up.\u00a0 Things change.\u00a0 New openings occur.\u00a0 Your \u201cpleasant persistence\u201d and strong continuing desire to join the organization differentiates you and may open up second chances.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Hopefully, after your thorough and well-thought-out job campaign, you land a position with an organization you are excited about joining.\u00a0 Congratulations!\u00a0 Now is a good time to reflect on how you can succeed, even before your first day on the job.\u00a0 How can you again differentiate yourself\u2014just as you did in the job search process\u2014and become an increasingly valuable employee?<\/p>\n
