{"id":875,"date":"2013-05-29T16:45:22","date_gmt":"2013-05-29T23:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/careersingovernment.com\/tools\/?p=875"},"modified":"2013-05-29T16:53:55","modified_gmt":"2013-05-29T23:53:55","slug":"a-life-lesson-in-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/gov-talk\/career-advice\/a-life-lesson-in-government\/","title":{"rendered":"A Life Lesson in Government"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-876\" alt=\"Interview and key concept\" src=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept.jpeg\" width=\"373\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept.jpeg 1728w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.careersingovernment.com\/tools\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/021810528_interview-and-key-concept-480x320.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 373px) 100vw, 373px\" \/><\/a>The greatest advice I gave as a government employee was always rooted in good common sense. \u00a0This may seem obvious, but it really does make a difference when you are looking to move up in your career.<\/p>\n<p>My advice is straightforward and goes like this:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat you do when you DON\u2019T get the job is just as important as what you do when you get the job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, it can be even more important!<\/p>\n<p>You see many people do not take defeat well and they show it in their attitude and actions after the big promotion.\u00a0 They sour and make it known that they are unhappy.\u00a0 Sometimes they even take it out on the person who may have received the job.\u00a0 In some cases, this person does not even know what offense they have given but it is obvious they are not liked. \u00a0This very situation took place when I went to work in another City Department.<\/p>\n<p>There was a woman in the department who had many years of experience and was not afraid to let everyone know she was far more capable and knowledgable than anyone else. \u00a0Now I pride myself on killing everyone with kindness and she was no different.\u00a0 I was going to win her over while everyone watched.<\/p>\n<p>It was not easy. \u00a0She felt entitled to the job I had left based on her background and experience.<\/p>\n<p>When a colleague of mine retired, it opened a door for her to move up and she applied and secured the position. \u00a0Once at my level, she shared that the earlier process was unfair. \u00a0Since we were colleagues, it was fair game to give her some friendly coaching.<\/p>\n<p>When I am not chosen for something I always go to the person who was chosen and tell them congratulations, and I am here to help if they need me.\u00a0 What it tells the people watching is you have the emotional intelligence to handle defeat with charisma and grace.\u00a0 These are the same characteristics needed to lead people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The greatest advice I gave as a government employee was always rooted in good common sense. \u00a0This may seem obvious, but it really does make a difference when you are looking to move up in your career. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member. Jerry joined the solid waste family in December 2000 as the safety and training specialist. Within a short period of time he was promoted to supervisor and eventually promoted over to code enforcement as a housing program supervisor. After spending six years at City Hall, Jerry returned home to solid waste as the division manager. During his time with the City Jerry has obtained a Bachelors of Science in Business Management and an MBA in 2011 with the University of Phoenix. Jerry ran for Office as a council member for the City of Clovis in 2007 and attended the San Joaquin Political Academy in 2008. Jerry is active in his church, community, and currently holds a position on the City of Clovis personnel Commission as an appointed member.
