Here are five tips to get you started!<\/p>\n<p><b>Tip 1:\u00a0 Your goal is work+life \u201cfit,\u201d not \u201cbalance.\u201d<\/b>\u00a0 Balance infers that the goal is a 50-50 split between your responsibilities on and off the job.\u00a0 Because that happens rarely, if ever, we always focus on what we don\u2019t have instead of seeing what we could have.\u00a0 Work+life \u201cfit,\u201d on the other hand, is about the possibilities based your unique personal and professional circumstances, on a given day, week, month or year.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tip 2: Learn to manage your everyday work+life fit, one small \u201ctweak\u201d at a time.\u00a0 <\/b>\u00a0Unfortunately, no one is going to tap you on the shoulder and say, \u201chey, why don\u2019t you finish that project and then head to the gym.\u201d\u00a0 We have to make those micro-tradeoffs about which priorities we are going to take care of and when every day.\u00a0 But how do we do it?<\/p>\n<p>A few years ago, I began to study a group of people I call the work+life fit naturals.\u00a0 While almost everyone else in their workplace struggled to get everything done, the naturals seemed to make it all happen without breaking a sweat.\u00a0 How did they do it?\u00a0 I translated their secrets into the simple weekly practice found in my new book, TWEAK IT: Make What Matters to You Happen Every Day.\u00a0 It harnesses the power of small, deliberate actions and priorities to make what matters at work and in your personal life.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tip 3: When you experience a major life transition, learn to create a plan that flexibly resets your work+life fit.<\/b> Start the conversation with your manager by presenting a clear plan that specifies the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Type of flexibility you are proposing to reset your work+life fit (eg. a shift in hours, teleworking, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>How the work will get done (not \u201cwhy\u201d you want flexibility\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter)<\/li>\n<li>How the business will benefit from your plan, and<\/li>\n<li>When the plan will be reviewing (e.g. initially 90 days; annually thereafter)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(For a step-by-step guide to create a win-win formal flexibility plan that is guaranteed to get a fair hearing, check out my book: \u201cWork+Life: Finding the Fit That\u2019s Right for You\u201d)<\/p>\n<p><b>Tip 4: As you flexibly tweak and reset your work+life fit, it\u2019s your job to (over) communicate with your boss, your team, and your clients.\u00a0 <\/b>When you are out-of-sight because either you work from home or work flexible, non-traditional hours, be mindful of consistent accessibility and reliability:<b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you aren\u2019t immediately reachable, make it a priority to check messages regularly and respond in a timely manner.<\/li>\n<li>Initiated a \u201ccheck in\u201d by email, IM or phone once or twice during the day with your team or your manager to see if there is anything you need to be aware of.\u00a0 Most likely there won\u2019t be, but they will appreciate the extra effort.<\/li>\n<li>Each week, put together one-page of highlights of accomplishments.\u00a0 In today\u2019s economy, we should all have a record of what we\u2019ve done\u2026not just flex workers!\u00a0 It comes in handy when negotiating for a raise or promotion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Tip 5:\u00a0 Be flexible with your flexibility, as you manage your work+life fit.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Nothing causes a manager or a coworker to lose patience with your work+life fit faster than a consistent unwillingness to periodically \u201cgo the extra mile.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 If there\u2019s an unexpected deadline and it\u2019s your time to leave, offer to stay now and then.\u00a0 If you\u2019re scheduled to work from home, offer to come into the office if it\u2019s the only day a client can meet.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the initiative, being conscientious and going the extra mile, from time to time, are small actions that go a long way to making your work+life fit succeed for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>For more, check out Cali Yost\u2019s award-winning <a title=\"Work+Life Fit Blog\" href=\"http:\/\/worklifefit.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Work+Life Fit blog<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0connect with her on Facebook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twenty years ago, clocks and walls use to tell us where work ended and the other parts of life began.\u00a0 But as technology exploded in a \u201cdo more, with less\u201d economy, the clocks and walls disappeared.
