Des Moines Water Works

Des Moines Water Works provides safe, affordable and abundant drinking water to 500,000 Central Iowans. Our water meets or exceeds all state and federal standards for drinking water.

The utility owns and operates three water treatment facilities and 1400 miles of  water distribution system piping that can supply up to 110 million gallons per day of potable water. We also maintain more than 10,000 hydrants for fire protection.

In addition to providing water to customers in the Des Moines metro area, we provide a cost-saving service to municipalities by serving as a billing agent for sewer use and trash fees.

Des Moines Water Works’ Fleur Drive Treatment Plant and General Office are located in the beautiful Des Moines Water Works Park – 1,500 acres of open wooded areas. Biking, jogging, picnicking, fishing, and hiking are a few of the activities that park patrons enjoy. Picnic areas, complete with tables and grills, are in several areas of the park. Large, open areas are available for team sports such as softball, tag football, and soccer.

In addition, Des Moines Water Works owns and operates Dale Maffitt Reservoir and Park – another 1,500 acres southwest of Des Moines, where the L.D. McMullen Water Treatment Plant is located.
