Santa Margarita Water District

Employer Description

The Santa Margarita Water District (SMWD) was formed in December 1964 under the provisions of the California Water District Law. The District's purpose is to meet the present and future water and wastewater needs of the service area. In its more than thirty-five years of existence, the District has expanded from the original 41,400 acres to 62,285 acres and eight improvement districts. The District operates a dual distribution system providing both domestic and non-domestic water. SMWD operates three separate sewage systems and is an industry leader in water recycling. Our Oso Creek Water Reclamation Plant produces 1.5 million gallons per day of highly treated recycled water from sewage. Reclaimed water is used to irrigate greenbelts, parks, schools, and golf courses. SMWD utilizes innovative advancements in technology to help reduce costs and increase efficiency. Vast capital improvement projects such as the current $29 million expansion at our Chiquita Water Reclamation Plant near Ortega Highway will allow us to produce more recycled water. We look at the big picture forecasting 20 years into the future to ensure our ability to provide our customers with quality services and excellent customer care.
