    Introduction

    Are you an organized, detail-oriented professional who takes pride in delivering excellent customer service and supporting the community? The Scottsdale Police Department is seeking a Code Inspector to join our dynamic Code Enforcement team. In this highly visible role, you will work directly with residents, business owners and property representatives - serving as a key point of contact and ensuring every interaction is handled with professionalism, clarity and follow-through. A core component of this position is seeking voluntary compliance through education, communication and consistent follow-up. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to accurately assess and document code compliance and a commitment to seeing cases through to resolution. This position may serve in a traditional field inspection capacity or as part of a short-term rental inspection assignment depending on operational needs. You will play a critical role in conducting inspections, coordinating with other city departments and helping maintain a safe, responsive and well-regulated community.     The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform field inspections and enforcement duties of the City's Code regarding property maintenance, public nuisances, zoning, signs, housing, and health and safety violations. An employee in this class has daily contact with the public.

    Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity.

    The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $33.90 /hour or $70,512.00 annually.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
    • Two years of public contact experience.

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.

    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/service assignment.

    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
    • Responds, orally and/or in writing, to complaints from the public.
    • Performs commercial and residential inspections, proactive and complaint-initiated field inspections, preventative enforcement, and other inspections; determines compliance with municipal codes.
    • Patrols assigned areas of the City to locate and observe violations of city codes including zoning nuisance, environment, swimming pool, neighborhood enhancement and health and safety ordinance violations.
    • Investigates possible violations of City property maintenance, nuisance and zoning codes; identifies violations and properties not in compliance and follows up with notices and citations to ensure compliance with city codes. Works with citizens, property and business owners to correct violations.
    • Researches case histories, approval documents, approved construction documents, property ownership records, sales tax licenses, aerial photos, microfiche records, utility records and other related documents as necessary.
    • Provides information to the public, other City departments, and interested parties regarding zoning, other regulations, and related departmental programs and policies.
    • Prepares reports, documents inspections, issues notices or letters, photographs property conditions and maintains required records.

    • Some work is performed in a City office environment.
    • Physical effort, typically involving some combination of walking, moving, bending, stooping, lifting arms above head, kneeling, crouching and crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight.
    • Travel to/from sites and meetings in various locations.
    • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Reach, grip and move debris to gain access to or expose objects for inspection.
    • Walk across trenches, dirt piles and climb stairs.
    • Exposure to hazardous situations on inspection sites.
    • Exposure to dust, grease, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes and unpleasant but not hazardous odors.
    • Operate a variety of standard office equipment, including a computer, telephone, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
    • Operate measuring devices, camera, ladder, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
