Position Description

Engineering Inspector I is the entry-level classification in the Engineering Inspector series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform construction inspection of contracted projects within the City Right-of-Way and assist in ensuring compliance with approved plans, specifications, standards, and applicable regulations. Conducts field inspections of contract work performed by various trades and crafts involved in the construction of municipal infrastructure and facilities, including roadways, curbs, cutters, sidewalks, alleys, City owned buildings, water systems, sewer systems, lift stations, storm drain systems, traffic signals, and streetlights. Reviews construction plans, specifications, and traffic control plans for accuracy and compliance. Coordinates and oversees material testing for construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, aggregates, soils, reinforcing steel, building materials, and various types of pipes. Prepares detailed daily inspection reports documenting project activities, progress, and field conditions. Assists in preparing progress payment estimates for contractors and drafting construction change orders. Identifies and reports non-compliant work and monitors corrective actions. Performs basic office engineering tasks, including documentation, recordkeeping, and project coordination. Attends and coordinates project meetings with contractors, engineers, and other stakeholders. Operates City vehicles, computers, and related equipment.
An Engineering Inspector I may be promoted to Engineering Inspector II after a minimum of one (1) year of employment and at the recommendation of the appointing authority. The current salary range for an Engineering Inspector II is $6,552-$7,898/mo.
The current vacancy exists in the Capital Projects Department with the City of Fresno. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
THE REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure placement on the eligible list.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree; or completion of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion.
-AND-
Twenty (24) units of accredited college level course work in engineering, drafting, surveying and/or inspection.
-OR-
Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent GED completion and two (2) years of journey level experience in one of the constructions trades and crafts. (Examples may include carpentry, plumbing, roofing, electrician, welding, inspections, etc.)
If qualifying with education, a copy of degree or college transcript must be uploaded and included in your online application for verification of requirement. Applicants lacking the documentation may be rejected.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
Possession a valid California's Driver's License required at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process may consist of the following:
Written Examination - 100%: The written examination is designed to assess a candidate's ability to read engineering plans and specifications, establish and maintain good work relationships and knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering, types of soils, testing, general street and building construction, safety, design and accepting surveying practices. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the Written Examination to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
The written examination has been tentatively scheduled for the week of June 8, 2026.

Veteran’s Preference

HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)
Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
