    TPWD MISSION

    To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

    PHYSICAL WORK ADDRESS: Blanco State Park, 101 Park Rd. 23 Blanco, TX 78606

    GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

    Under the direction of the Park Superintendent, this position performs routine (journey-level) state park operations work and is responsible for the interpretation and preservation of Blanco State Park. Works closely with the Park Superintendent and Regional Interpretive Specialist to promote the conservation and stewardship of natural & cultural resources. Researches, plans, develops, implements, facilitates, and evaluates interpretive programs. Conducts programs and tours. Serves as the Volunteer Coordinator, recruiting, developing, and providing direction to volunteers, interns, and alternative workforce. Performs grant writing and basic accounting. Prepares reports, maintains interpretive and volunteer files, and assists with revenue collection and camper registration. Assists with all aspects of the daily operations of an overnight recreational park to include the maintenance and cleaning of park buildings, grounds, equipment and the park's trail system. Develops and maintains productive partnerships with park partners and the local community, including site promotion, marketing and attending special outreach opportunities. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


    Qualifications:

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree.

    Experience:

    No experience required.

    Licensure:

    Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid State driver's license.

    ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

    Education:

    One year of experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs may substitute for 30 hours of the required education, with a maximum substitution of 120 semester hours.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education:

    Graduation from an accredited college or university in Park Administration, Recreation & Parks, Wildlife/Fisheries Science, Natural and/or Cultural Resource Conservation, Range Management, Forestry, Biology, Anthropology/Archeology, History, or closely related field.

    Experience:

    Experience in customer service.

    Experience in park operations.

    Experience in interpretation or conducting educational programs.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of facility, equipment, and ground maintenance repairs and techniques.

    Knowledge of cultural traditions, historic practices and experiences.

    Knowledge to develop, implement, manage, publicize, and evaluate related interpretive programs.

    Knowledge to properly maintain artifacts and historic property.

    Knowledge of mathematics.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.

    Skill in effective interaction with staff at all levels of the department and other State agencies and organizations.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

    Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.

    Skill in training others.

    Skill in planning, assigning and/or supervising the work of others.

    Skill in providing direction and guidance to less tenured staff.

    Ability to survey customers for program quality.

    Ability to work with various constituencies and populations.

    Ability to plan, organize and manage special events.

    Ability to make public presentations and conduct tours.

    Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities.

    Ability to assist with various park duties such as maintenance, administration or customer service as needed.

    Ability to hire, evaluate and train other staff and/or volunteers.

    Ability to work as a member of a team.

    Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

    Ability to effectively and properly demonstrate various historic activities to the public using a variety of artifacts, replicas, and related techniques.

    Ability to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Required to work in a public park with overnight camping.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

    Hours may be reduced or extended as needed during primary peak season.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.

    Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures.

    May be required to operate a State vehicle.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
