    Overview

    Supervisors shall remain informed of all requirements, policies, procedures, orders, and forms which relate to their assignment or operation. Supervisors shall supervise their immediate subordinates in such a manner as to permit a thorough knowledge of their work habits, job performance, productivity, and their general conformance to policies, procedures, and orders. Supervisors shall be familiar with the individual strengths and weaknesses of their immediate subordinates to permit a fair evaluation of each subordinate. During duty hours, supervisors shall be available to supervise, direct, and assist their subordinates at all major incidents, except when legitimate circumstances related to their supervisory duties otherwise prohibit their presence. When practical to do so, supervisors shall immediately ascertain the factual circumstances related to any complaint, or any probable complaint, against a subordinate, or any employee in the absence of the employee's supervisor. Supervisors shall be responsible for the proper exercise of their authority as set out in the General Manual, City HR Policies, or the Divisional Operations Manual. Supervisors must not neglect their duties, fail to make necessary decisions, or refrain from issuing required orders. They are responsible for fulfilling all obligations related to their assignments and must complete all required forms.

    Responsibilities

    • Ability to perform the functions of a 911 Dispatcher I & II; Data entry/typing to enter information into various computer programs

    • Ability to type at a minimum of normal speaking speed to document continuous radio traffic from units in the field

    • Span of control varies from 9 to 12 dispatchers on a shift

    • Directly supervise, mentor, coach, and discipline employees

    • Must maintain a positive work environment and motivate employees to do the same

    • Coordinate personnel and communications for both urgent and routine incidents

    • Perform quality control by monitoring incoming calls, radio traffic, and on-duty personnel

    • Counsel employees and ensure discipline is maintained in the workplace

    • The ability to work 8- to 12-hour shifts, which may vary from day to evening start times, and be able to transition with minimal notice

    • Be alert and readily available to work additional hours to fill vacancies

    • Stay abreast of ongoing incidents and effectively monitor the operation of an assigned shift

    • Maintain awareness by actively listening to differentiating radio tones and volumes of voice

    • Listen to multiple areas within the facility for general questions from staff, increased phone calls indicating an emergency event, emergency traffic occurring via radio, alarms sounding in different areas of the center, and/or other stimuli encompassing the need for active listening

    • Able to make quick decisions under stress to ensure the safety of citizens and first responders while following department policies and SOPs

    • Maintain the skills of a Metrocom 911 Dispatcher I and II, as well as those of a Metrocom Dispatch Supervisor. Be ready to transition between roles as needed

    • Maintain daily work schedules to ensure adequate staffing for a 24-hour operation

    • Monitor for any delinquencies in attendance/timeliness

    • Evaluate employees' payroll reports, submit corrections, and adjustments to payroll

    • Prepare schedules every two weeks for upcoming shift assignments

    • Modify/adjust daily work schedule to meet minimum personnel staffing demands when employees have unexpected or scheduled leave

    • Possess the ability to thoroughly learn new procedures, policies, equipment, software, and hardware

    • Skillfully knows how to apply, troubleshoot, and teach/guide subordinates as necessary

    • Maintains a high level of knowledge and skill to train new and existing employees in a classroom setting or within the normal workplace

    • May be asked to perform other duties as assigned

    Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

    • Non Exempt - Full-Time

    • Rotating 40-hour work week, must be available to work additional hours as needed

    • This role requires working various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as part of a 24/7 operation.

    -Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

    • In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services.

    Qualifications

    • High School Diploma / GED

    • Five (5) years of experience

    Licenses and Certifications

    Required

    • A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire

    • IAED EMD/EPD Certification

    • TCOLE Telecommunicator License

    • TCIC/NCIC Full Access Certification

    • CPR/First Aid Certification

    • Basic Instructor - must be completed one (1) year from the date promoted

    Basis of Rating

    A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
