    Job Summary

    Play an essential role in keeping Olathe’s solid waste services running smoothly.

    The City of Olathe is seeking a dependable, customer-focused professional to serve as a Transfer Station Scale House Operator. The Solid Waste Transfer Station is a City facility where waste is brought for weighing and transfer before being transported to its final disposal site. This position serves as the first point of contact at the facility and helps ensure daily operations run smoothly, accurately, and safely.

    The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, comfortable handling cash and reporting responsibilities, and committed to providing courteous, professional service to residents, contractors, and City staff.

    What You’ll Do

    • Welcome and assist customers entering the transfer station
    • Weigh and log incoming vehicles and direct them to the appropriate dumping locations
    • Process cash and charge transactions, issue receipts, and prepare daily reports and deposits
    • Support recordkeeping, reporting, and administrative tasks related to transfer station operations
    • Respond to questions from the public and City staff with professionalism and courtesy
    • Help promote safe work practices and support compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures

    • Experience in clerical support, office administration, gate operations, or similar work
    • Strong customer service and communication skills
    • Attention to detail and accuracy in cash handling, data entry, and recordkeeping
    • Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively with other staff

    Schedule

    • Tuesday-Thursday: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM
    • Friday: 6:45 AM-4:45 PM
    • Saturday: 6:45 AM-12:45 PM


    Holidays

    • Required to work holidays other than Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day

    The Transfer Scale House Operator performs highly responsible clerical support for the operation of the Solid Waste Transfer Station. They monitor the entrance to the transfer station site, admit and direct vehicles to and from dumping locations and perform a wide variety of clerical support duties for the Division Manager. This position also provides information and assistance to the city staff and the public regarding assigned programs and services.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Weighs private trucks, vans, and cars entering the transfer station; weighs and logs city sanitation vehicles entering the transfer station; directs vehicles to the proper dumping locations.
    • Accepts daily cash and charge tickets; collects cash, issues change, and provides receipts; prepares a daily report of transactions completed; operates scale computer & printer; prepares transfer station's daily cash deposits; prepares a variety of reports; recommends and assists in the implementation of policies, plans and procedures; prepares additional correspondence as needed.
    • Provides training and direction to other employees in the completion of operational tasks; reviews the work of others for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards, policies, procedures, and specifications.
    • Adheres to safe work practices; ensures compliance of Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations; takes a responsible role in supporting divisional and departmental efforts to improve the safety culture of the city.
    • Coordinates with other staff to ensure customer service requests are resolved; responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.


    Qualifications

    Experience: Two years of related experience is required, preferably in general office management and gate keeping or other similar operations.

    Education: A h igh school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Licenses & Certifications: A valid driver’s license and favorable driving record are required.
