DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe Microbiologist III position plays a critical role in advancing public health surveillance by leading complex microbiological and molecular based testing, particularly in wastewater-based epidemiology.
Responsibilities:• Perform analysis of wastewater samples to detect pathogens associated with communicable diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
• Develop, implement, and optimize molecular and microbiological methods for the detection of emerging infectious agents, including Monkeypox and other emerging public health threats.
• Ensure strict adherence to quality control and quality assurance protocols, maintaining compliance with all relevant regulatory and accreditation standards.
• Contribute to scientific reporting, documentation, and training, supporting the continuous improvement of laboratory practices.
• Collaborate with internal and external partners, including local health jurisdictions and academic institutions, to meet grant objectives and enhance surveillance capabilities.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four
reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases
and substances, and/or contagious diseases or physical trauma conditions of a short-term disabling nature,
such as broken bones or temporary loss of sight or hearing.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Bacteriology, Microbiology or a closely related field is required.
When assigned to Health Department: A Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a Physical Science
from an accredited institution is required.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Two years of experience in laboratory work dealing with bacteriology, serology or virology are required.
PREFERENCES**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.** - RNA extraction

SALARY INFORMATION GRANT FUND POSITION
Grants & Special funded positions are dependent upon continued available funds. If funding is no longer available, employee may be laid off or transferred. Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
