    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Workdays & Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm *

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The Engineer-In-Training (EIT) provides a support role within the Office of The City Engineer (OCE). OCE is dedicated to enforcing the City of Houston's (City) Infrastructure Design Manual for both public and private capital improvement within the City's right-of-way. The candidate will be expected to receive professional engineering licensure within five years of being hired as an E.I.T.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Assists in updating the City's Infrastructure Design Manual (IDM), which is the City’s governing document for engineering design of civil infrastructure located within the right-of-way.
    • Assists in the reviewing, updating and writing construction specifications and standard drawings.
    • Schedules meetings, creates meeting agendas, and tracks minutes of meetings.
    • Interacts with engineering community concerning various issues and proposes solutions to problems revealed by interactions.
    • Contributes to and assists in leading IDM and specification review meetings.
    • Reviews and verifies that project manuals abide by most current specification requirements.
    • Assist Supervisor to complete tasks and special projects as required.
    • Discusses engineering matters and provides guidance to consultants, owners and the general public regarding engineering design requirements.
    • Investigates and/or responds to inquiries from technical personnel and the general public on design criteria and project specifications.
    • Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing and provide excellent customer relations.
    • Reviews and evaluates the adequacy of various products submitted by vendors for use throughout the City's infrastructure.
    • Improves operations, processes and performs other duties as assigned.


    WORKING CONDITIONS
    This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking and standing. May require walking on rough surfaces during inspections and investigations.

    This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier III Level.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
    Requires graduation from an approved curriculum in engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers as of satisfactory standing, and possession of a valid Engineer-in-Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    No experience is required.

    LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
    Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.

    PREFERENCES

    Preference may be given to applicants who have/demonstrate:
    • Technical writing experience.
    • Who demonstrate proficiency using Rules & Regulations Technical Standards and Microsoft Office applications.
    • Candidates with excellent communication skills and superior customer service attributes.

    *Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**

    SALARY INFORMATION
    Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.

    PAY GRADE - 22
