    Career Opportunity

    This lateral opportunity is designed for certified peace officers who have prior service experience, and have passed probation, with a law enforcement agency in the performance of duties directly related to Category III Peace Officer standards. Service time must be within five years immediately preceding application with the City of Las Vegas.

    Starting pay up to 7 years of experience:

    Step 1 - one year of experience - $60,077 annual

    Step 7 - seven years of experience - $76,016 annual

    Step 13 (top pay) - n/a - $94,334 annual

    + Nevada PERS Pension - Employer Paid Agency

    + No Social Security Deduction (6.2% stays in your check)

    + No State Income Tax

    + Shift Differential - 5%

    + Employee contributions are currently $40 per month.

    + Uniform Allowance $1,700 annually

    No, the department does not require this test, however, you must pass a medical fit-for-duty assessment upon job offer.

    Do lateral hires have to complete an academy?

    No, the State of Nevada has recently adopted POST III certification reciprocity for Corrections Officers from other states.

    What are the requirements for reciprocity?

    • Certification as peace officer or its equivalent in another state, or have completed a federal law enforcement training program that is equivalent to a category III peace officer in that state.
    • Currently employed as a peace officer, or no more than a 60 month employment gap as a peace officer.
    • Meet hiring standards listed under NAC289.110
    • Pass the online reciprocity course within 90 days of starting the course.
    • Pass the Nevada State Certification exam.
    • Certification has not been revoked or suspended.

    Tattoo Policy

    All candidates are prohibited from having tattoos or any other visible markings on their faces or collarbones. The department may make exceptions for hands and neck tattoos upon review and approval.

    Beard Grooming Policy

    Officers may grow a beard no longer than one-half inch.

    Testing Process (Applicant Status)

    The test for placing candidates on the eligible list will consist of an application evaluation and scoring. It is essential that applications include detailed information regarding education, certifications, and experience. Applicants who pass this assessment will move forward to the department assessment process.

    Example of Duties

    Essential Functions:

    1. Conduct routine patrol of detention facilities and grounds to ensure the safety and security of inmates; enforce laws and ordinances pertaining to detention.
    2. Supervise inmates during meetings, recreational and visiting periods, mealtimes, work assignments or related activities.
    3. Assist with admission and discharge processing; issue clothing and supplies to new inmates, process transfers and arrange transportation to and from court and other corrections facilities; carry a firearm during certain work activities.
    4. Conduct visual and physical searches of inmates for contraband, weapons or narcotics; check on the orderliness and sanitary conditions of inmate quarters; arrange for clean up of areas as required.
    5. Enforce inmate rules and regulations and apply disciplinary action as required.
    6. Prepare routine reports on operations and activities; maintain a variety of logs and ledgers.
    7. Maintain inventory records of inmates' possessions; release properties and money as required.
    8. Monitor fire and safety conditions of the facility; monitor fire alarm panel, video screens and related security equipment.
    9. Assist in securing facility during situations of unrest; follow outlined procedures for lockdown; assist with investigating incident and write reports on situation.

    Marginal Functions:

    1. May assist with coordinating inmate information with outside agencies and jurisdictions.
    2. May participate in public education and school information programs; may interact with citizen groups.
    3. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
    Minimum Requirements

    Experience: Must have prior service experience, and have passed probation, with a law enforcement agency in the performance of duties directly related to Category III Peace Officer standards. Service time must be within five years immediately preceding application with the City of Las Vegas.

    Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

    License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter. Must be twenty-one years of age and a citizen of the United States on the date of application. Possession of current Nevada P.O.S.T. category I, II, or III on the date of application, or demonstrate the ability to obtain reciprocity within a reasonable period. Certification must be maintained thereafter. (Please note: P.O.S.T. certification requires qualifying with a firearm at least twice each year.)

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of:

    Basic methods and procedures of corrections and law enforcement. Basic corrections and law enforcement regulations. Basic first-aid and CPR practices and techniques. Basic self-defense tactics. General laws pertaining to the operation of a correctional facility. Basic report writing techniques.

    Ability to:

    Learn to interpret and enforce laws pertaining to detention and corrections. Learn to interpret and enforce federal, state and local laws and departmental regulations. Learn and administer first-aid and CPR techniques. Learn practices and procedures to be used in emergency situations. Learn public relations practices. Learn to operate a computer. Learn security procedures. Use and properly care for firearms. Observe details accurately, recognize suspicious behavior. Understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Prepare reports.
