    LIDS Technician

    The purpose of this class is to maintain accurate, complete, and timely inmate records within the Local Inmate Data System (LIDS) for inmates housed at the Hampton Sheriff's Office detention facility. The LIDS Technician ensures compliance with Compensation Board reporting requirements, applicable federal and state laws, and Sheriff's Office policies and procedures related to inmate records and data submission. The position performs duties under the direct supervision of the Deputy of Inmate Services and is accountable for the appropriate use of delegated authority to effectively execute assigned responsibilities. Pursuant to 15.21603 of the Code of Virginia, the incumbent is appointed at-will and serves at the pleasure of the Sheriff. This position is non-exempt.

    Typical Tasks:

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date inmate records and data systems
    • Enter and verify intake, release, and population data for reporting
    • Conduct VCIN/NCIC checks and support inmate release processes
    • Calculate inmate sentences and ensure correct time computations
    • Prepare documentation for transfers, releases, and court updates
    • Perform audits and data comparisons to ensure compliance and accuracy
    • Assist law enforcement, courts, and the public with inmate information requests
    • Generate monthly reports and support state reimbursement tracking

    Minimum Requirements:

    • High school diploma or GED required. An associate degree or completion of college coursework in business administration, computer information systems, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred.
    • Must have a combination of relevant coursework and professional experience that demonstrates proficiency in records management, data entry, and computer system operations.

    Required experience includes:

    • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in records management, data entry, clerical administration, or database management;
    • Experience working with computerized record systems or inmate management systems preferred.
    • Demonstrated accuracy in data entry and the ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information;
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and general office technology.
    • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities may be considered.
    • Must successfully pass a background investigation before employment.
    • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's substance abuse policy, if applicable.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

    Additional Requirements:

    • Must attend and complete Compensation Board LIDS training at least once every twenty-four (24) months.
    • Must meet any required Department of Criminal Justice Services standards applicable to the position.
    • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
