    Essential Functions

    Good knowledge of the principles of modern penology, especially in the areas of correctional security and discipline, behavior patterns and attitudes of individuals or groups of persons in custody. Ability to perform for long periods under varying working conditions. Ability to use good judgment in controlling prisoners individually and in groups, some of whom may be emotionally disturbed or unruly. Ability to learn the principles and techniques of first aid and be able to administer first aid in emergency situations. Ability to assist in supervising the work of inmates. Ability to carry out oral and written directives accurately. Ability to remain alert at all times and be able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports when necessary. Responsible for all security aspects of a courthouse, including ensuring that the judges and judicial staff, court employees and general public visiting the courthouse are safe. Ability to perform tasks as handing papers to the judge, ejecting people from the courtroom and helping witnesses leave the stand. Ability to take charge of watching over a jury. Ensure that no weapons are brought into the courthouse and that the public complies with building safety rules. Other job duties include watching doorways, managing metal detectors and securing the courthouse's hallways.

    Qualifications

    Some work experience involving supervision of individuals and groups of people. Must be able to endure long periods of repetitiveness in routine duties. Possession of a valid VA Driver's License. Must maintain telephone number for emergency contact. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must maintain certification in all Criminal Justice Services Commission mandated training as a Jail Officer in the State of Virginia. May require working irregular hours. The incumbent must not have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty or no contest to, a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia. Must be 21 years of age or older.

    Additional Requirements

    All employees of the Petersburg City Sheriff Office are responsible for following direction provided by, or instructions given by, the Sheriff. Direction may be provided directly or indirectly passed through the Chain of Command. All applicants will undergo a criminal background check and a driving record inquiry. Selected applicants must pass a pre-employment drug screening test, written test, as well as, a medical examination and a polygraph examination.
