Under the direct supervision of a fire officer, this position is responsible for providing the highest level of protection of life and property to both the fire fighters, as well as the citizens through cooperation and innovative support of the mission of the Amarillo Fire Department. Duties include, but are not limited to structural, wildland and aircraft rescue firefighting, providing emergency medical services (EMS), performing emergency vehicle extrications, responding to hazardous materials, performing fire apparatus and fire station maintenance, and providing public relations education. Employee shall follow all AFD safety policies and procedures.

Entrant eligibility: Eligible candidates must be at least eighteen (18) years of age to test, but not more than 36 years of age on the date of hire. Must pass firefighter entrant's physical, Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT), aerial ladder climb, oral interview(s), background investigation, and criminal history check. Must meet all eligibility requirements for certification as Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structural Firefighter, and Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) EMT-Basic including vaccination requirements established by the City's clinical affiliates to participate in the required EMT training. Candidates may need proof of additional vaccinations as required by affiliate partners providing education and clinical experience. Licenses/Education: This position requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent and a valid Class C Texas driver's license. Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certified Basic Structural Firefighter, NREMT/TDSHS EMT-Basic certification, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200, and IS-700, or ability to achieve all within six (6) months of date of employment. On the job training through the Amarillo Fire Academy will be provided to applicants to assist in obtaining these certifications. Applicants from out of state shall be required to obtain a Texas driver's license within 90 days of residency. Physical/Fitness: Must initially pass, and annually thereafter, the OSHA respirator medical evaluation for both air-purifying and air-supplying respirators. While wearing full firefighter protective clothing and SCBA, the firefighter shall complete AFD Operations-level Consumption Test annually. Minimum physical fitness standards include the demonstrated ability to climb six (6) or more flights of stairs, wearing in excess of 50 lbs. of protective clothing, carrying up to 40lbs of equipment/tools, and breathing through a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) while performing search and rescue tasks for victims ranging from newborns to adults weighing over 200 lbs.
Work Shift: Requires working 24-hour shifts with a rotating schedule. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays year-round.
Retention: Employees shall both complete the assigned Position Task Book (PTB) and acquire a Texas Class "B" Exempt Driver's License within one year of employment. Continued employment is also dependent upon successful completion of the probation period, maintaining physical/fitness requirements, and satisfactory job performance ratings. Personal Appearance Standard: Amarillo Fire Department employees may display non-offensive tattoos on duty. Tattoos will not be allowed anywhere on the eyes, face, head, scalp, or neck. No body piercing shall be visible while any member is on-duty or representing the Department in any official capacity. Alteration to any area of the body that is visible in any authorized uniform or attire that is a deviation from normal anatomical features, and which is not medically required is expressly prohibited. In accordance with Texas Local Government Code 143.025 (f), an additional five points shall be added to the examination grade of an applicant who served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge, and made a passing grade on the examination.
In accordance with Article 12 of the Meet and Confer Agreement between the City of Amarillo and the Amarillo Professional Fire Fighters Association, an additional five points shall be added to the entrance examination grade of an applicant for a beginning position in the Fire Department who is a certified paramedic and made a passing grade on the examination, unless the applicant has already received five additional points due to military service.
Additional points for military service or certified paramedic will only be applied if proper documentation (i.e. DD214 showing honorable discharge or XX Certification Number) is turned into the Human Resources department by the exam date.
