    Court Security Officer

    Kitsap County is seeking a security officer to fill this critical role that serves as a Court Security Officer to the Kitsap County Courthouse and Juvenile Detention Facility. As a Court Security Officer for the Sheriff's Office, you will:

    • Ensure secure entry operations by greeting and screening all visitors entering the Kitsap County Courthouse and Juvenile Detention Facility, authorizing access, and maintaining orderly flow through security checkpoints.
    • Patrol courthouse facilities and related buildings, actively identifying and addressing fire hazards, vandalism, property damage, loitering, and unauthorized activities to preserve a safe operational environment.
    • Monitor surveillance systems and security equipment, responding promptly and decisively to unusual occurrences or potential threats.
    • Document security activity by entering detailed information into official security logs, including visitor interactions, suspicious behavior, and inspection findings to support operational accountability.
    • Enforce courthouse rules and safety regulations by warning violators of infractions related to prohibited items, weapons, smoking, or loitering, and coordinating with law enforcement when necessary.
    • Safely manage temporary storage of legal weapons and maintain strict adherence to weapons handling protocols.
    • Carry and deploy authorized equipmentincluding firearms, tasers, handcuffs, and pepper sprayin accordance with RCW 9.41.300(7)(c) and Sheriff's Office policies.

    What You Bring:

    • Professional Credentials / Licensing: Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or equivalent certification such as LEOSA (required for lawful firearm carry under RCW 9.41.300(7)(c)).
    • Ability to pass ongoing firearms proficiency standards as determined by the Sheriff's Office.
    • Valid Washington State Driver's License: Required for employment eligibility and mobility between assigned locations.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in security, law enforcement, criminology, or a related field demonstrating the ability to independently perform essential security functions.
    • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and respond effectively to emergency situations in a security setting.
    • Experience monitoring surveillance systems, security checkpoints, and assigned facility areas, with demonstrated responsiveness to unusual occurrences (preferred).
    • Proficiency in utilizing security screening equipment including metal detectors and monitoring tools.
    • Competency in operating personal computers and using databases, document imaging systems, spreadsheets, and web-based platforms for reporting and recordkeeping.
    • Knowledge of courthouse security laws, rules, regulations, and administrative screening procedures.
    • Familiarity with legal terminology, court operations, and document handling practices.
    • Demonstrated safe weapons handling practices and defensive tactics proficiency.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with judicial staff, law enforcement, and a diverse public population.
    • Demonstrated tact, patience, discretion, and impartiality when working with individuals from varied socioeconomic backgrounds.

    Pre-Employment Requirements:

    • Pass all job-related examinations/tests necessary to demonstrate required knowledge, skills and abilities, in a multi-phase testing process as determined by the hiring authority at time of job posting. These tests may include, but are not limited to, oral interviews, medical examination, truth verification test, psychological evaluation and weapons qualification with passing scores set by Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.
    • Pass a comprehensive background investigation/criminal background check through law enforcement agencies.

    At time of appointment, the successful candidate must:

    • Obtain a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or equivalent certification such as LEOSA (required for lawful firearm carry under RCW 9.41.300(7)(c)).

    Within six months of appointment, the successful candidate must:

    • Possess CPR, First Aid and AED certification.
