ABOUT THE POSITIONThere is currently one (1) fulltime vacancy for an
Advanced Systems Engineer (ASE) AI Focused, in theInformation, Services and Technology (IST) Department.
The County of Marin’s Information Services & Technology (IST) Innovation Team is seeking an AI-Focused Systems Engineer to design, build, and operationalize artificial intelligence solutions that improve public services, internal operations, and data-driven decision-making.
This role sits at the intersection of AI engineering, systems integration, and public-sector innovation, translating emerging technologies into practical, ethical, and scalable solutions for County departments.

Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, deploy, and maintain AI-enabled solutions and Microsoft 365 applications that support County operations and services
- Develop and integrate AI systems (e.g., machine learning models, LLM-powered tools, automation workflows) into existing enterprise platforms, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability
- Build and manage data pipelines and infrastructure to support AI/ML workloads, including data ingestion, transformation, and model deployment
- Configure and support Microsoft 365 tools and platforms (including Copilot, Power Platform—Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI) to enhance productivity and decision-making
- Partner with County departments and cross-functional teams to identify use cases, define requirements, and deliver effective solutions
- Prototype, test, and pilot emerging technologies, translating innovative concepts into production-ready tools
- Monitor and evaluate AI systems for performance, accuracy, bias, transparency, and compliance with public-sector standards
- Support and implement governance, security, privacy, and responsible AI practices across AI and Microsoft 365 environments
- Provide end-user support, training, and documentation for deployed tools and solutions
- Maintain documentation of architectures, standards, and best practices, and stay current on emerging technologies to drive continuous improvement
ABOUT YOUOur Highly Qualified Candidates have:- Strong background in software engineering, data engineering, or systems engineering
- Experience building or deploying AI/ML systems in production environments
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern data stacks
- Experience with APIs, microservices, and system integration
- Knowledge of LLMs, prompt engineering, or AI-assisted workflows (preferred)
- Understanding of responsible AI principles (bias, explainability, governance)
- Ability to translate technical concepts into practical solutions for non-technical stakeholders
- Interest in public service and civic impact
QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge of: - Application analysis, design, programming, testing, and debugging.
- Computer hardware platforms, operating systems, and middleware systems.
- Database design, management, and recovery; and data access.
- Principles and techniques of application and systems analysis and design.
- Evaluating and selecting software and working effectively with vendors to integrate solutions.
- Analyzing and resolving complex problems, including applications, and software integrations.
- Working effectively with clients, peers, and support teams to define business requirements, provide support for software and applications, and ensure that tasks are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to develop REST APIs in C#, Develop SQL objects including stored procedures, views, tables, other user-Defined Functions
- Ability to design, develop, and deploy web APIs and MVC web applications
- Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical clients or stakeholders.
Familiarity with: - Records management and documentation principles and standards.
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Accessibility.
- Information Security Principles.
- Business processes, operating practices, and the organizational structure of a public-sector agency.
- Database design, management, and recovery; and data access.
- Application architecture and associated communication protocols
Ability to:- Analyze and resolve application, software, and system integration issues.
- Design, develop, test, and implement applications using programming languages, databases, middleware, and web services.
- Evaluate, select, and integrate software solutions in collaboration with vendors and internal teams.
- Develop and document system designs that meet defined business and technical requirements.
- Research, recommend, and implement technology solutions that improve efficiency, functionality, and user experience.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with clients, peers, and support teams to ensure timely, high-quality results.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any four-year combination of professional experience, certification, and/or relevant coursework that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and abilities. Examples include:
- Twelve (12) semester units of coursework from an accredited program and in a discipline relevant to the assignment is equivalent to a full year of related professional experience.
- A completed certification program relevant to the assignment and knowledge and abilities necessary of the role.
- A training program with evidence of completion providing the knowledge and abilities necessary of the role.
- An internship and/or apprenticeship providing the required knowledge and abilities of the role.
- Relevant professional experience demonstrating knowledge and abilities necessary of the role.

Hybrid schedule: The IST Department has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely. During the initial probationary period, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.
