    POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

    The Electrician I/II/III is responsible for skilled technical work in the installation, inspection, maintenance, repair, and testing of various electrical components and equipment in City facilities.Tasks involve the use of acquired skills in electrical installation and general maintenance, electrical repair and construction activities related to building operations. Electrician II requires a Journeyman Electrical license issued by the State of Colorado, or reciprocal state. Electrician III requires a Master Electrical license issued by the State of Colorado, or reciprocal state.

    This position will also be required to work on non-electrical issues performed by the division. It is a mandatory requirement of this position to work overtime, take weekend duty, and be on-call for facility and emergencies. Must be able to reach the City limits, within 60 minutes after being contacted, when on-call. This is a safety-sensitive position.

    The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate as follows: Electrician I: $74,942.40 - $95,929.60; Electrician II: $80,537.60- $103,126.40 (requires a Journeyman Electrical license); Electrician III: $86,569.60 - $110,801.60 (requires a Master Electrical license).

    The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage, and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

    • Operate, maintain and test a variety of fire alarm control panels and their associated components including, but not limited to, duct detectors, smoke detectors and heat detectors

    • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances
    • Demonstrate knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
    • Demonstrate knowledge and troubleshooting of variable frequency drives

    JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

    Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
    1. Responsible for the day-to-day operations and supervision of the maintenance staff as needed by the Maintenance Supervisor to include:
    • Reads and interpret electrical plans and specifications for compliance with applicable state and local codes and ordinances; confer with electrical contractors regarding the design of new electrical installations as well as the alteration of existing electrical installations within the City
    • Prepares and maintain necessary records and reports
    • Maintains electrical, mechanical, and other equipment in a number of municipal buildings
    • Operates various types of small tools and perform semi-skilled to skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of City facilities
    2. Maintains a computerized maintenance management system and the related equipment maintenance files, spare parts inventory, manpower and maintenance forecasting
    3. Requisitions parts and materials for needed repairs
    4. Works with outside contractors as needed for specialized repairs, modifications and workload management
    5. Performs:
    • The installation, repair and preventative maintenance of electronics on control systems, electrical circuits and systems
    • Removal and overhaul of pumps, motors and compressors
    • General electrical work in the alteration and maintenance of City facilities
    • Monthly inspections of elevators and elevator equipment, as required by law
    • Operate, maintain and test a variety of fire alarm control panels and their associated components including, but not limited to, duct detectors, smoke detectors and heat detectors
    • Operate, maintain, repair and test emergency generators
    • Operate, maintain and test security camera, burglar alarm and electronic access control systems
    6. Implements all safety procedures related to the work performed including Lockout/Tagout and Chemical Handling procedures
    7. Assists Facilities Management Supervisor with monitoring outside contracts to secure and maintain compliance with Federal and State regulations, City Codes, specifications, contract documents, and regulations, including:
    • Assisting the Facilities Management Supervisor in the preparation of bid documents for assigned projects
    • Monitoring outside contractors inspecting and making repairs to facilities
    • Working independently on field inspection and making decisions exercising technical judgment, taking remedial action when needed
    • Monitoring, reviewing, and approving invoices submitted by contractors
    • Consulting with supervision on unusual or difficult cases
    • Interpreting and explaining ordinances, codes, regulations, and policies to contractors and other interested parties
    • Investigating and answering requests, suggestions, and complaints
    • Coordinating activities with other departments and divisions to ensure that compliance with all applicable City standards and specifications are met
    8. Responsible to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing while providing appropriate customer service and interaction, including:
    • Participating in City programs, task forces, peer groups, and professional organizations
    • Providing customer service and explanation of activities
    • Maintaining appropriate courtesy at all times
    • Presenting a professional appearance and demeanor
    • Preparing and submitting effective written reports, memos, activity logs, etc., to all levels of the organization
    • Demonstrating effective oral communication skills with the public and other members of the department

    • Keeping supervision updated of activities planned and completed
    9. Performs work safely, including:

    Other Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Required to be on-call at times, with the ability to respond to City facilities within 30 minutes
    2. Serve as Acting Facilities Management Supervisor, as needed
    Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

    Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
    Electrician I
    Required:
    • Graduation from high school or completion of GED
    • Minimum of three concurrent (3) years of experience as an apprentice in the maintenance and repair of electrical systems
    • Must possess a valid driver license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
    • FBI specific background check due to CJIS requirements and our required FM access to affected areas.
    Electrician II
    Required :
    • Graduation from high school or completion of GED
    • At least five (5) years progressively responsible electrical system repair and
    • maintenance experience
    • Possession of State of Colorado (or reciprocal state) issued Journeyman Electrician’s License
    • Must possess a valid driver license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
    • FBI specific background check due to CJIS requirements and our required FM access to affected areas
    Electrician III
    Required :
    • Graduation from high school or completion of GED
    • Possession of State of Colorado (or reciprocal state) issued Master Electrician License
    • Must possess a valid driver license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
    • FBI specific background check due to CJIS requirements and our required FM access to affected areas
    Preferred :
    • Any additional education such as college level course work or vocational trade school
    • Experience related to commercial building maintenance, including voltages up to three-phase 480 volts
    • Certified for working in the field for the following: confined space entry
    • Vocational trade school or military school course work in electricity, mechanics, pipefitting, and instrumentation, or related field
    • CPR and first aid knowledge
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel
    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
    Physical Requirements
    The position is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical strength and stamina for:
    • Occasional sitting to perform daily office tasks and to drive to and from work sites; constant standing and walking indoor and outdoor in all weather conditions over all types of terrain
    • Frequent squatting, bending, kneeling and crawling to perform routine equipment and structural maintenance; frequent climbing of ladders up to forty-five (45) feet, balancing on ladders and roofs, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform repairs and maintenance
    • Occasional light grasp and fine manipulation to perform daily office functions; frequent firm grasp and handling to use safely tools and equipment needed for specific jobs
    • Frequent step up/down and actuate mechanism to safely enter/exit and operate vehicles and other equipment
    • Constant near acuity and hearing to perform daily tasks, recognize mechanical and electrical issues and communicate with staff and citizens; occasional far acuity to recognize potential mechanical problems and dangers
    • Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds from ground to overhead to place equipment and material; frequent carrying of up to 20 pounds on shoulder or around waist to move tool pouch; occasional carrying of up to 30 pounds up to 30 feet to move equipment and supplies to work site; occasional push/pulling of up to 100 pounds to move and load genie into vehicle and move to desired area within facility

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Work is frequently performed indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to extreme temperatures. Work is performed at over 28 City facilities year-round in all weather conditions. On-call and overtime duties are required for emergency situations. Various work assignments are performed with exposure to noise levels that may cause a distraction and high electrical voltage, up to 13,000 volts, in a high moisture area. Working environment may include small confined spaces, working on top of a four-story structure and performing repairs in an emergency situation. Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals such as refrigerants, natural gas, asbestos, lubricants, all types of paint, drain cleaners, anti-freeze, and other chemicals as necessary.
    Required Materials and Equipment
    3/4 ton trucks and vans, 5 ton bucket trucks, electrical test equipment, electrical generators, basic hand and shop tools, saws, welders, ladders up to 45 feet in height, cherry pickers or overhead cranes, shovels, scaffolds, construction materials and supplies, drills, hammers, saws, air compressors, drain snaking equipment, paint sprayers, welders, cutting torches, metal shears, Genie® lifts, two-way radios, pagers, personal computers and keyboards, telephones, fax machines and other basic office equipment.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
    • Background check including employment references, criminal history, and driving record review
    • You must be able to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background investigation and be fingerprinted for this job; a felony conviction is generally considered grounds for denial of CJIS access; outstanding arrest warrants can also lead to being disqualified from CJIS certification

    The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

    401(a) Contribution Rates:
    Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
    Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.
