    Fire Protection Instructor

    The Fire Protection instructor is responsible for providing instruction to students within the Fire Protection Technician Associate of Applied Science Degree program in accordance with the mission, goals, policies and procedures of the College. The instructor is responsible for providing an active learning environment in the new state-of-the-art Public Safety & Transportation Center. The instructor teaches courses that enable students to achieve program learning outcomes and prepare for a career in fire protection, fire prevention and fire engineering. The instructor creates a safe, student-centered learning environment that is respectful of diversity and places learning at the center of the students' educational experiences.

    This position will be open until filled, with a first review date of June 1, 2026. After this date, the recruitment may close without further notice. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

    Responsibilities
    • Provide instruction for assigned classes.
    • Facilitate learning environment including facilitation of equipment and lab set ups.
    • Facilitate a program of student evaluations to determine effectiveness of instruction and student achievement.
    • Create a classroom environment that is respectful of diversity and demonstrates a commitment to multiculturalism.
    • Maintain accurate student records and reports as requested by administrative offices.
    • Identify students needing assistances and refer students with problems to Student Services.
    • Cooperate with Student Services and Academic Support Division staff members to help students adjust to the learning environment.
    • Remain current of developments in the teaching field so that instruction provides for individual learning styles, uses the latest supportive technology and can utilize alternative delivery methods.
    • Be familiar with the curriculum content of assigned courses and use continuous quality improvement techniques to update content so that it fosters current evidence-based program assessment and improvement.
    • Prepare and update course syllabi for each course taught and work cooperatively with members of other departments in coordinating courses.
    • Work cooperatively with library staff in the selection of reference materials and coordination of library reference work for maximum utilization of library and other resources.
    • Participate in staff development activities and serve on college improvement teams and college wide committees as appropriate.
    • Attend advisory committee meetings, department, division, and faculty meetings.
    • Assist in the enforcement of college regulations and report student conduct violations to administration.
    • Cultivate a personal interest in communities served by the college and participate when possible within community activities.
    • Assist in student and staff recruitment and job placement activities for graduates.
    • Meet weekly office hours and other duties required to meet student, employer, and college needs.
    • Assist the Coordinator and Director in other duties as assigned.
    • The instructor will ready the students for the working environment and expectations of the work place.
    • Assist in planning and executing State Practical Fire Testing events for students.
    • Ensure program equipment is in good working order, elevating maintenance and equipment needs to equipment technician and/or progrm coordinator.
    • Partner with Program Coordinator for coordination of room and facility usage within the PSTC training areas.
    Qualifications

    Physical Requirements

    • Requires lifting of 40 pounds or more
    • Requires knowledge and use of power equipment
    • Requires working in Immediately Dangerous to Life and health (IDLH) environments
    • Requires you to work in various weather conditions

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in fire protection or related field
    • Maintain professional certification/licensure including Wisconsin Fire Instructor 1, IFSAC or Proboard certifications in (Driver Operator, Fire inspector, Fire 1 and 2)
    • Minimum of two years (4,000 hours) of occupational experience in the fire service.
    • Must meet and maintain Wisconsin Technical College System Faculty Quality Assurance System (FQAS) certification requirements.

    Blackhawk Technical College does not offer H-1B or other work authorization visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and maintain work authorization throughout the employment term.
