    Firefighter

    Provides emergency medical response as a first responder. Responds to all fires for fire suppression. Responds to hazardous material spills. Responds to rescues as a rescue team member. Provides fire protection and prevention up to par with all local regulations.

    Responds to fire and emergency calls as a member of a fire company. Lays hose, carries and sets up ladders, and uses fire equipment to extinguish fires and make rescues. Administers first aid. Participates in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections. Participates in drills and training activities. Operates department emergency and non-emergency apparatus. Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

    Must have basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered including: Frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Firefighter 1 skills. Successful Completion of CSFM Firefighter 1. Must have a current CPAT or Biddle. Medical treatment up to par with San Diego protocol. Capable in most aspects of emergency care, firefighting and rescues. Techniques used to recognize health and safety hazards; Working with hazardous materials and able to successfully contain and clean and mitigate disposal methods. Safe operation of tools and machinery; Use of computer software programs (MS Office, iOS applications). Must have the ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems. Must be able to render aid on medical and trauma emergencies including treatment and turn over to a higher level of medical authority if needed Must have the ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications in order to successfully interact with other firefighters, employees and management.

    Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus. Regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, operate computer keyboard and controls, and communicate verbally and in writing. Requires ability to commute physically to various areas of the shipyard including but not limited to shipboard activities. Must be capable of ascending/descending stairs or ladders, walking on uneven surfaces, and transiting through manholes and other confined, congested spaces. Physical dexterity must allow for bending and reaching. Must remain alert and comply with all safety requirements. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is exposed occasionally to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is relatively low to moderate in office environments.The noise level in the outdoor shipyard production environment is moderate to noisy 70% of time which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering.

    Ensures NASSCO's Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCO's Fire Management System.

    Pay Scale: $53,300 - $74,900
