POSITION TITLE: Crossing Guard
REPORTS TO: Lead Safety Officer, Director of School Safety, and Assistant Director of School Safety
POSITION SUMMARY: The School Crossing Guard is responsible for ensuring the safeand orderly crossing of students and pedestrians at designated intersections before and after school. This position promotes traffic and pedestrian safety by monitoring roadway conditions, directing students, and assisting with safe street crossing procedures. The Crossing Guard serves as a visible safety presence and reinforces safe behaviors while maintaining a positive and supportive environment for students, families, and the community.
This position requires approximately
2 hours of work per day, typically aligned with school arrival and dismissal times.
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Report to assigned crossing location at designated times and control the flow of traffic and pedestrians to ensure safety.
- Utilize approved methods and procedures to maintain order among students and ensure safe street crossing.
- Direct vehicular traffic using established safety protocols, including hand signals and other approved equipment.
- Monitor traffic conditions and remain alert to potential hazards.
- Provide clear, courteous guidance to students and pedestrians.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position is classified as light work and requires standing and walking for extended periods. The employee must have adequate hearing to perceive normal spoken communication and sufficient visual acuity to perform assigned duties safely. The position involves working outdoors in varying weather conditions and requires the use of appropriate safety equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Minimum of an eighth-grade education.
- Ability to work effectively with children and the general public.
- Prior experience working with people is required.
- Previous experience as a School Crossing Guard and knowledge of traffic safety procedures is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: - Ability to maintain discipline and order among students in a respectful, tactful, and courteous manner.
- Ability to apply prescribed traffic control methods, including the use of signals, signage, and safety equipment.
- Ability to work a schedule that aligns with school start and dismissal times or as assigned by the supervisor.
