If filled at the Traffic Management Technician I, Grade 15, the hiring range is $55,517-$58,282.If filled at the Traffic Management Technician II, Grade 19, the hiring range is $64,942-$86,340. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR MCDOT seeks a Traffic Management Technician I/II for its Transportation Management Section within the Division of Traffic Engineering & Ops. This is an entry-level traffic management work of a paraprofessional nature. This position monitors and operates MCDOT's Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS), including the central traffic signal system and the traffic video camera system to identify traffic problems and traffic signal malfunctions, dispatch repair teams, and help develop solutions to problems resulting from traffic incidents, conducting traffic engineering studies and analyses, and field observations to minimize traffic congestion.
What You'll Be Doing The person in this position leverages an automated traffic management system, including operating a central traffic signal computer, identifying traffic problems and/or malfunctions within the system, and dispatching the appropriate service technician. In addition, the person in this position will participate in managing traffic incidents by deploying and requesting resources in response to incidents. The employee will work rotating shifts on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor and control the central traffic signal system, adjusting timings in response to delays, non-recurring incidents, construction, and special events.
- Monitor and assess information on traffic flow and conditions affecting traffic flow throughout the regional transportation network.
- Evaluate traffic incidents and formulate operational solutions using policies, procedures, and precedents.
- Dispatch resources and response units to incidents and equipment malfunctions.
- Disseminate information to the public through the Traveler's Advisory Radio, County Cable TV channel, website, and media personnel.
- Coordinate incident responses with other agencies/contractors to resolve traffic congestion and incidents.
- Document actions taken and event activity timelines.
- Conduct traffic engineering studies and analyses.
- Develop traffic signal timings, coordination plans, and timing profiles.
- Respond to inquiries by phone, e-mail, and formal letters.
Minimum Qualifications If filled at Traffic Management Technician I: One (1) year of experience in traffic engineering or traffic management that has required the application of the principles of traffic engineering and mathematics to the solution of traffic management problems involving traffic control, capacity, vehicular speed, and related matters.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted (both in engineering and in computer applications).
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
Medical Exam Protocol: This position requires completion of a pre-employment Medical History Form and a drug screening (Core Exam II) to assess your ability to safely perform the essential duties of the role.
If filled at Traffic Management Technician II: Three (3) years of experience in paraprofessional traffic engineering with a concentration in traffic signal and/or operations that has required the application of the principles of traffic engineering and mathematics to the solution of traffic engineering/management problems involving traffic control, capacity, vehicular speed, and related matters; and including some experience in traffic signal computer operation.
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted (both in engineering and in computer applications).
License: Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.
