    Job Summary

    This is a professional 4-month Fall internship position within the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas that provides students with valuable hands-on experience in the judicial system.

    Interns will support court operations by assisting with research, case management, administrative duties, and court proceedings while gaining practical knowledge of legal processes, court administration, and the justice system.

    This position offers an excellent opportunity for students pursuing careers in law to develop professional skills in a real-world judicial environment.

    * This Fall Internship opportunity has a start date after 9/1/26

    Reporting Relationships

    This worker reports directly to the President Judge or the President Judge's designee.

    Other Specific Tasks or Duties
    • Assist with legal and case law research using various databases and resources
    • Observe court proceedings including hearings, trials, and conferences
    • Support case file management and organization of court records
    • Assist with preparation of court documents and correspondence
    • Help coordinate scheduling of court proceedings and meetings
    • Provide administrative support to judges, court staff, and clerks
    • Assist with data entry and maintenance of court management systems
    • Support special projects as assigned by the President Judge or court administrators
    • Attend educational sessions and training programs related to court operations
    • Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive information and court proceedings
    • Assist with public inquiries and provide general information as appropriate
    • Support technology initiatives and digital file management
    • Help with preparation of statistical reports and court documentation
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Applicants must be enrolled as a law student.
    • Consideration will also be given to a full-time student with junior standing in an accredited undergraduate bachelor's degree program in pre-law; completion of the first semester of the junior year (75 credits); and satisfactory completion of fifteen (15) credits in one of the major fields of study.
    Additional Requirements
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • Strong academic performance in relevant coursework
    • Demonstrated interest in the legal system and public service
    • Availability to work 20-25 hours per week
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
    • Professional demeanor and appearance appropriate for a court environment
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Essential Skills:

    • Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to interact professionally with judges, attorneys, court staff, and the public
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to gather, analyze, and synthesize information from various sources
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
    • Research skills using both electronic databases and traditional resources

    Personal Attributes:

    • High level of integrity and ethical standards
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
    • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic court environment
    • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
    • Professional judgment and discretion in handling sensitive information
    • Collaborative approach and ability to work effectively with diverse teams

    Technical Skills:

    • Familiarity with legal research databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis preferred but not required)
    • Basic computer skills and willingness to learn court management software systems
    • Ability to operate standard office equipment including copiers, scanners, and printers
    • Comfort with technology and electronic filing systems
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Previous internship or work experience in legal, government, or non-profit settings
    • Coursework in constitutional law, criminal justice, or related legal studies
    • Volunteer experience with community organizations or social service agencies
    Required Licenses/Certifications/Clearances
    • Must successfully pass background check.
    Physical Requirements/Work Environment
    • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
    • While performing the duties of this position, the intern is regularly required to sit sometimes for long periods of time.
    • The intern has to be able to communicate with court and non-court personnel. The intern may frequently be required to go from one location to another i.e. Courtroom, Chambers and/or non-court offices.
    • The intern must regularly lift and/or move judicial files weighing up to 10 pounds. Occasionally there may be some lifting involving boxes with case files.
    • This position requires the ability to operate a laptop or PC and/or any other general office equipment.
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. (Office with typewriters/printers and light traffic)
