    Job Title

    Traffic Technician

    Job Description

    This is manual work in the installation and inspection of traffic signs, laying out and application of traffic markings and the maintenance and repairs of striping equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Traffic & Sign Supervisor and is reviewed through inspection of work during process and upon completion of assignment for compliance with "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices".

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities
    • Assists or installs traffic control signs in accordance with the "Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices."
    • Travels County roadways inspecting traffic signs for compliance with standards including condition, placement and visibility.
    • Performs preventative sign maintenance tasks as needed such as trimming vegetation, cleaning signs and repairing damaged signs.
    • Participates in the manufacturing of new signs.
    • Updates sign inventory database.
    • Participates in layout of pavement markings from detailed drawings of new road constructions. Layout and painting of school, railroad crossings, crosswalks, and other pavement markings.
    • Participates in the installation of automatic traffic counters, enters data and records; makes field sketches of intersections and streets.
    • Repairs and maintains automatic traffic counters, paint striping equipment and hand spraying equipment.
    • Assists in layout and cutting of pavement marking stencils in accordance with "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices".
    • Maintains Daily Work Sheet which consists of job numbers, time and materials.
    • Performs duties at times under extremely heavy traffic conditions.
    • Participates generally in the laboring work of a crew, as needed.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent, with some course work in mechanical drawing and layout; AND
    • Three (3) years' experience in all phases of painting and knowledge of mechanical repair desired.
    • A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
    • Knowledge of "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices".
    • Knowledge of methods, practices, tools and materials used in maintenance and repair of various types of equipment.
    • Knowledge of County roads and locations of responsibilities.
    • Knowledge in the use of MS Word, Excel and Outlook is essential.
    • Knowledge of blending, mixing and application of paints and related materials and of striping operations.
    • Knowledge of project management and organizational skills.
    • Skilled in use of power and hand tools and equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
    • Ability to have excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Ability to work and maintain reliable full-time attendance.
    • Ability to comprehend, speak, and read the English language.
    • Ability to have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public.
    • Ability to use special types of equipment.
    • Ability to operate small and large paint striping equipment.
    • Ability to perform mathematical problems with speed and accuracy.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective public relations with general public and fellow employees.
    Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions

    Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust). This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment) This position often requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations or clearances. Bending/stooping, sitting, standing, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing/pulling, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement of firm grasping and fine manipulation, repetitive motions, depth perception, balancing, squatting, working at heights. This position may require frequent lifting up to 100lbs and carrying up to 100lbs.

    Work Location

    Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite.
