    Lateral Firefighter

    Vancouver Fire is currently accepting applications for Lateral Firefighter Salary: Firefighter - $95,088 - $129,792 annually (2026 negotiations is underway) Depending on years of experience Application period: May 15, 2026 – June 15, 2026

    Applicants must meet the following requirements by the application date:

    • A citizen of the United States of America or lawful permanent resident
    • Ability to read and write the English language
    • High School Diploma or the equivalent
    • 21 years of age
    • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license
    • Three (3) consecutive years experience as a full-time, paid firefighter with an agency whose primary responsibility is fire protection and emergency service and have primary responsibilities including fire suppression, hazardous materials mitigation, and emergency medical services
    • Washington State Emergency Medical Technician Basic or out of state EMT that meets WAC 246-976-142 requirements for certification.
    • Must possess a NFPA Firefighter 2 certification or equivalent.

    Special Requirements:

    • Any applicant receiving an offer of employment from the City of Vancouver must be able to score well in a panel interview, pass a thorough background investigation, do well in a Chief's interview and successfully complete physical ability, psychological and medical testing.
    • Ability to pass an extensive history screening process
    • Flexible work hours required

    Important Dates:

    Oral Boards with the top candidates – July 11 & 12, 2026

    All candidates must have the ability to:

    • Maintain an acceptable knowledge level by participating in hands-on training and by studying fire services procedure manual, state (FST) courses/manuals, nationally recognized fire service books, EMS protocols, emergency medical textbooks, and other material as approved by the Training Chief and EMS Chief
    • At the scene of an emergency, receive instructions and accomplish duties in accordance with established standard operating guidelines and nationally recognized good practices
    • Understand and apply administrative guides and established policies
    • Follow verbal and written instructions
    • Meet the knowledge, health, and physical qualifications established by the City

    • A stable and verifiable work history
    • A record of regular and dependable attendance
    • A professional, well-groomed appearance
    • Strong communication and problem solving skills
