    Description

    Examples of Duties

    1. Carries a pager and responds to incidents as dispatched.
    2. Performs normal and related firefighter duties at the fire scene.
    3. Assists with proper maintenance of fire vehicles, equipment, building, and other departmental items.
    4. Participates in regular and special drills and training sessions as required.
    5. Actively participates in Community Involvement Programs delivered by the department.
    6. Miscellaneous duties/responsibilities as required or assigned.
    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
    1. Performs other duties as assigned.
    Typical Qualifications
    1. Must be available at all times (twenty-four hours per day seven days per week).
    2. Required to carry fire department pager at all times.
    3. Required to live and work within a reasonable distance from assigned station.
    4. Must attain Michigan Firefighter I certification within two year of appointment.
    5. Must be physically able to perform required duties and to pass agility test.
    6. Required to attend regular and special training classes.
    7. Required to maintain the minimum attendance average specified in department SOGs as a condition of continued employment.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions.
    1. Constantly exposed to weather, including extreme heat and wet/humid conditions. Occasionally exposed to extreme cold.
    2. Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical shock, radiation, explosives, and toxic/caustic chemicals. Occasionally required to work in high exposed places.
    3. Constantly requires carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, frequently requires lifting and pulling objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Occasionally required to push objects in this weight category.
    4. Occasionally requires climbing and crawling. Occasionally requires reaching, including overhead reaching.

    Supplemental Information

    • Annual stipend of around $7,000. Paychecks delivered monthly.
    • Fire Department sponsorship through the Ottawa County Fire Academy.
    • Future potential opportunities for Fire Department sponsorship through Emergency Medical Technician training.
    • Excellent in-house training.
    • Specialty team opportunities including HazMat, Technical Rescue, and Drone Teams.

    The City of Holland Pension Plan is through the Municipal Employee's Retirement System (MERS). The Defined Contribution Plan is a qualified pension plan under section 401(a) of the Internal Revenue Code. This plan allows you and the City of Holland to make pre-tax contributions to your individual account that accumulates tax deferred. The City will contribute 6% of your salary, you can choose to contribute 2%, which in turn the City will match 2% for a total of 10%. There is a five-year vesting for all City contributions.
