    GENERAL DESCRIPTION

    NOTE: INTERNAL POSTING, OPEN TO TPWD STATE PARK EMPLOYEES ONLY.

    Under the direction of the Regional State Park Police Captain, this position is responsible for performing public safety and resource enforcement work in a state park and surrounding communities, including, law enforcement services and coordination of law enforcement activities within the assigned area. Serves as a team leader and assists the Captain with training, recruiting, hiring, mentoring and evaluating of officers. Conducts incident command functions incident, special events, natural or manmade disasters and develops and maintains emergency procedures. Serves as a force multiplier to support public safety and law enforcement actions in the region and assist federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies when called upon or assigned. Responds to emergency situations and is subject to be on-call for service. Partners with and coordinates public safety and law enforcement operations with the park superintendents and other regional staff. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

    Law Enforcement Duties:

    Performs law enforcement patrols, investigations, administration, training, search and rescue, emergency management, community-oriented policing, public assistance & education, outreach, and inner & outer agency operational support. Serves as a team lead and assists the Captain in operational support duties.

    Program or Position Specific Duties:

    Provides administrative support for State Park Police duties. Assists in management of employee time sheets, officer patrol logs, citations and monthly citation reports, employee performance plans, field training and evaluations. Schedules and assigns duties for State Park Police Officer team members. Prepares, submits, and maintains reports of activities. Coordinates safety programs. Directs specific law enforcement operations as assigned. Assists in public safety, special event coordination, Homeland security and emergency response for natural disasters and other serious incidents.

    Supervisory Duties:

    Assist with regional State Park law enforcement training and serves as a field training officer for new officers. Coordinates safety programs.

    Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with Agency, Division and Department rules, regulations, and procedures.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

    Education :

    Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree.

    Graduation from the Texas Parks and Wildlife State Park Law Enforcement Academy or Texas Game Warden Training Academy.

    Experience :

    Four years of experience as a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) commissioned State Park Police Officer.

    Licensure :

    Must possess a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.

    Commissioned as a Peace Officer by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

    Must possess a current license as an Intermediate Peace Officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).

    Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Instructor's license.

    NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon maintaining required licenses and certifications.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

    Knowledge of Texas criminal laws, the code of criminal procedures, the penal code, and Texas Parks and Wildlife rules and regulations.

    Knowledge of State Park law enforcement principles.

    Knowledge of Law Enforcement Patrol Techniques, Tactics and Procedures.

    Knowledge of basic mathematics.

    Knowledge of TCOLE proficiency standards and instructional techniques.

    Knowledge of training procedures, techniques and practices.

    Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

    Skill in effective verbal and written communication.

    Skill in preparing and completing all required agency reports and investigation.

    Skill in completing various daily, weekly, quarterly, annual and special reports.

    Skill in using standard office equipment.

    Skill in the use Law Enforcement vehicles and equipment.

    WORKING CONDITIONS :

    Required to meet annual qualifications with Firearms and Law Enforcement Tools along with TCOLE training requirements.

    Required to work in a high-visitation public park with overnight camping.

    Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.

    Required to respond to emergencies and on-call and situations

    Required to pass a national fingerprint-based background check to maintain employment.

    Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.

    May work in and around natural outdoor pests such as insects, animals and poisonous plants.

    Required to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.

    Required to operate a state vehicle.

    Required to travel 25% with possible overnight stays.

    Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
