    Description

    The Modesto Irrigation District is currently recruiting to fill one full-time vacancy in the Fleet Maintenance area within the General Services Department to perform journey-level welding and fabrication in the maintenance and repairs of District vehicles, equipment, substation structures, irrigation systems, and power plants.

    Any qualified individual may apply . This is a non-exempt position and is allocated to the Utility Services and Maintenance Bargaining Unit. The list established as a result of this recruitment may be used to fill other Welder/Fabricator vacancies that may occur within the District through May 22, 2026.

    Examples of Duties

    Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Repair and fabrication of metal items utilizing metal working equipment including layout and design work;
    • Fabrication of sheet metal items such as boxes, trays, covers and vents; fabricate and repair grates, structures, railings;
    • Fabrication and installation of truck bodies and beds, trailers and other specialty items for any/all other District Departments;
    • Build up and hard face worn areas on construction equipment buckets and blades; body and fender work along with painting;
    • Repairs cracks and other structural defects in aerial trucks, digger trucks, truck mounted cranes and trailers;
    • Fabrication of specialty items and tools;
    • Fabrication from drawings, blueprints and sketches; Performs welding and fabrication repairs in the field.

    Other Related Duties
    Other duties as assigned.

    Typical Qualifications

    Any combination of education, experience, knowledge and abilities may satisfy the necessary minimum qualifications. A typical way to obtain the education, experience, knowledge and abilities would be:

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Course work from an accredited four (4) year trade school, college or university in welding, mechanical drawing and blueprint reading.

    Experience: Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in journey-level welding and fabrication. Experience in performing automotive repair is desirable.

    Knowledge and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of all types of welding including; electric, oxy-acetylene, and mig/tig;
    • Knowledge and ability to perform code quality welding and cutting of ferrous and non-ferrous metals;
    • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the trade; hazards and safety precautions; metal forming, tempering, hardening, sharpening and soldering;
    • Knowledge of DOT regulations for body installation and modifications;
    • Knowledge and ability to safely operate equipment such as but not limited to: metal lathe, iron worker, metal shear, ban saw, power forging hammer, box and pan brake, and metal milling machine;
    • Knowledge of basic auto mechanics, hydraulics and electrical systems;
    • Ability to visualize special projects; determine proper work method, design, engineer, layout, fabricate and evaluate completed project;
    • Ability to identify different types and grades of metal and determine proper repair and fabrication procedures;
    • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others;
    • Ability to maintain accurate records of materials, work time and other information as required;
    • Ability to safely work in a confined space and from elevated platform;
    • Ability to perform facility fabrication and repairs including but not limited to: steel building structures, automated drive through gates, high pressure washers, car wash, fuel dispensing station, material supporting racks, lighting systems, air compressors, and electric roll up doors;
    • Ability to instruct others in the use of welding equipment and techniques.

    Special Requirements: Must have a California Class C driver's license, possession of a certified welding certificate is required.
