  • Job Description

    Examples of Duties

    Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours a week.

    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Drives a small bus, passenger van, station wagon, or similar vehicle and pulls a fifth-wheel trailer.

    • Picks up and delivers mail and supplies and runs errands.

    • Checks vehicles for proper maintenance and safety.

    • Maintains mileage and other reports for Highway Patrol inspections.

    • Compiles and enters statistical data on a computer.

    • Performs janitorial duties such as sweeping floors, maintaining flower beds, and cleaning offices.

    • Assists in moving/arranging furniture and equipment.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience:
    One (1) year of experience driving automobiles or vans to transport passengers or supplies.

    License:
    Possess a valid California driver's license at time of appointment and maintain.

    Essential Functions

    • Operate a personal computer and other office equipment.

    • Communicate effectively with others in person and over the telephone.

    • Analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.

    • Perform job duties under stressful conditions.

    • Respond appropriately to situations.

    • Maintain confidential information in accordance with legal standards and/or County regulations.

    • Frequently lift and move with help, objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

    • Frequent use of depth perception, peripheral vision and color perception.

    • Frequently lift, carry, reach, push, pull, twist and manipulate large and small objects.

    • Kneel, bend, twist, squat, balance and crawl.

    • Frequent use of hand-eye coordination.

    • Occasional use of data entry device including repetitive hand and arm motion.

    • Normal dexterity, frequent holding and grasping.

    • Regular attendance is an essential function.

    Knowledge of:
    • Safe driving practices.

    • Main streets and freeways in the areas driven.

    • Janitorial supplies, equipment, and maintenance.

    • Basic California motor vehicle code and traffic laws.

    • Work safety practices.

    Ability to:
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions.

    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

    • Drive safely and efficiently.

    • Clean and care for an assigned area and equipment.

    • Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.

    • Perform minor building maintenance work.

    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.


    FAMILY CARE LEAVE

    Family Care Leave applies to all employees who work 1250 or more hours in any twelve month period.

    HEALTH PLANS AND LIFE INSURANCE

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to County-paid medical, dental, vision, life insurance, Employee Assistance Program benefits and are not eligible to participate in the Deferred Compensation Plan.

    JURY DUTY

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to pay or receive reimbursement from the County for Jury Duty.

    PAID TIME BENEFITS

    Extra-help employees are not entitled to paid bereavement,vacation, or holidays.

    PAID SICK LEAVE
    Extra-help employees are entitled to accrue up to five (5) paid sick days (40 hours) in a 12-month period.

    SOCIAL SECURITY

    Extra-helpemploymentearningsare not covered under Social Security. Merced County provides an alternate plan - Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) - for extra-help employees who are otherwise not eligible for participation in the County'sretirement system.

    COMPENSATION/UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE:

    The County does provide benefits to those eligible under the State Workers Compensation and Unemployment Insurance statutes.
