    Police Officer

    Performs work assigned; protecting, preventing, enforcing, call responding, pursuing, investigating, arresting, reporting, testifying in court, and relating to community policing responsibilities in preserving the peace and promoting the safety of citizens throughout the City of New Brighton. Performs related work as apparent or assigned.

    The City shall offer a hiring bonus of $5,000.00 to qualified lateral officers that are hired into the position of Police Officer for the City. This bonus will be paid in two installments: a) the first $2,500.00 will be paid on the first paycheck following the officer's hire, b) a second $2,500.00 will be paid the first paycheck following successful completion of the new hire's probationary period.

    Essential Functions
    • Reads; learns and applies the laws; ordinances; policies; rules and other materials required to perform all assigned accountabilities of the position.
    • Maintains order; enforces State laws and City ordinances; and protects life and property.
    • Assists in investigating and/or preventing criminal offenses; accidents and other problem areas.
    • Apprehends and controls offenders.
    • Responds to medical emergencies and applying appropriate first aid and/or CPR.
    • Prepares reports that include facts; analysis; and recommendations for action.
    • Testifies in court.
    • Monitors areas of the city and traffic.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or closely related field
    • Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) license
    • Emergency Medical Responder
    • Valid Driver's License

    • Developing and maintaining a thorough working knowledge of all department and applicable City policies and procedures in order to help facilitate compliance with such policies and procedures by all personnel.
    • Demonstrating by personal example the service excellence and integrity expected from all staff.
    • Developing respectful and cooperative relationships with co-workers, including willing assistance to newer staff so job responsibilities can be performed with confidence as quickly as possible.
    • Conferring regularly with and keeping the immediate supervisor informed of all important matters pertaining to those functions and job responsibilities for which accountable.
    • Representing the City in a professional manner to the general public and other outside contacts / constituencies in a manner that helps maintain and enhance New Brighton's reputation as a well-managed City.
