    Entry-Level Fire Fighter Position

    Start your fire fighter career today! Join our Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) O'hana and apply for our entry-level Fire Fighter Recruit I (FFRI). During the FFRI Training Program, you'll learn lifesaving skills from our knowledgeable and experienced Recruit Training staff. After successful completion of training, Recruits will become Fire Fighter I's with further training opportunities and career growth, including promotional opportunities to specialty discipline areas such as Rescue and Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) response.

    What you will do:

    • Participate in the Honolulu Fire Fighter Recruit Training Program and receive classroom and field training in the theories, techniques, methods, and procedures used in firefighting, emergency medical response, water safety, fire apparatus driver training, hazardous materials response, and rescue work
    • Learn and apply techniques, methods, and procedures in firefighting, rescue operations, hazardous materials incidents, and emergency medical response.
    • Respond to fire-related and non-fire-related alarms and participate in firefighting, rescue, and emergency response activities.
    • Provide first aid, CPR, and basic life support in accordance with department protocols.
    • Operate fire apparatus, emergency response vehicles, and firefighting equipment.
    • Assist in maintaining station facilities, apparatus, equipment, and grounds.
    • Participate in fire prevention activities, safety inspections, and pre-incident planning efforts.

    Special work conditions:

    • The use of protective equipment is required due to possible exposure to hazardous and noxious conditions and environments.
    • Work schedules involve 24-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
    • Perform duties in emergency situations that may require strenuous physical activity and exposure to varying environmental conditions.

    Career progression:

    • The expectation for any FFR I is to learn and progress upward to the Fire Fighter I level.
    • Opportunity to progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher-level positions will depend on satisfactory work experience, demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills, and successfully passing the internal promotional examination process.

    Class Title - Salary Range - Starting Pay*

    Fire Fighter I - SR-17 - $5,755

    Fire Fighter II - SR-19 - $6,222

    Fire Fighter III - SR-21 - $6,730

    *pay is subject to collective bargaining
